Yale University will no longer formally call first-year students "freshmen" as the university is officially changing its terminology to be gender-neutral. So instead of being considered an "upperclassman," a student with multiple years of collegiate experience will be officially considered an "upper-level" student. According to Yale's student newspaper, administrators are not expecting students, faculty and staff to change how they refer to freshmen or upperclassmen. The change is one that is merely to be used in official titles and correspondence. “It’s really for public, formal correspondence and formal publications … we’re not trying to tell people what language to use in their everyday casual conversations,” Yale Colleg Dean Marvin Chun told the Yale News. “We’re not trying to be language police.”The new gender-neutral terminology was unveiled in the 2017-18 edition of the student handbook. Yale's student newspaper reported that administrators have been considering the change to gender-neutral terms for several years. It really is a special place from taking care of our local businesses that have been shut down and impacted certainly our kids.”Salow said it was difficult when he told his staff and teachers last Friday that they had to close the school due to the coronavirus pandemic.Their first thoughts were about the children, Calhoun said.“It was devastating,” said Calhoun. “These are our kids and to know that they wouldn’t have the safety of being able to come to school every day and see their friends every day, just being a part of their lives every day, it was devastating for all of us.”Salow said the school is doing its best to meet the children’s needs, like preparing 200 meals a day through a delivery service. They’re hoping that Calhoun’s porch library will help to meet their educational needs while the schools remain closed.Reading is important, she said.“We have a sign out there: ‘Readers make Leaders,’” Calhoun said. “So, you need to be reading. Wreckage from a steamboat that caught fire and sank exactly 201 years ago has reportedly been spotted at the bottom of a Vermont lake.The Steamboat Phoenix sank on September 4, 1819 on Lake Champlain. There were more than 40 passengers and crew members onboard at 11 p.m. when the fire started.Passengers who were unable to board lifeboats as the steamboat caught fire were forced to jump into the water and cling to debris or swim for their lives to shore.
