WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Melania Trump expressed support for the care that migrant children separated from their families received in U.S. detention centers and cast doubt on the authenticity of some immigrants' stories of fleeing danger in their home countries during a series of recordings aired Thursday. The tapes aired on CNN come from Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former aide to the first lady who released a book last month entitled "Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady." The tapes, which were exclusively aired on Anderson Cooper's show, were secretly recorded in 2018 by Wolkoff. In the tapes, Melania is also recorded bashing the Christmas decorations. The White House has been critical of the book and says the first lady is focused on her family and serving the country. 827
WASHINGTON (AP) — A Trump health appointee who is accused of trying to muzzle an important scientific publication in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic apologized Tuesday for a separate video in which he reportedly says scientists battling the virus are conspiring against President Donald Trump and warns of shooting in America if Trump loses the election.Michael Caputo, the top spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, apologized to his staff for the Facebook video, said an administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.Caputo says on a taxpayer-funded podcast that Democrats don't want a coronavirus vaccine until after the election to punish President Donald Trump. News reports alleged last week that Caputo’s office tried to take over and muzzle a scientific weekly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that publishes what is supposed to be authoritative, unvarnished information about disease-fighting efforts, including, most importantly at present, COVID-19.Then on Monday came an account of the video on Caputo’s personal Facebook page in which he accused government scientists of conspiring against Trump and suggested violence could break out after the election.HHS is standing by Caputo amid calls for his ouster. 1315

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has been unable to land the big deal he sought with Congress to curb drug costs. But now he's moving on his own to allow imports of cheaper prescription medicines, along with other limited steps that could still have election-year appeal. Friday at a White House ceremony, Trump signed four executive orders. In addition to importation, they are about paying lower international prices for some Medicare drugs, passing rebates directly to consumers, and making discounted insulin available to low-income people. Democrats, including Joe Biden, are pushing a much more ambitious plan to empower Medicare to negotiate lower prices. 678
Walmart is getting a face-lift. On Wednesday, the retail giant unveiled a reimagined store design in 200 Supercenters by early 2021 and 1,000 by next fiscal year.Walmart said that the new design would create a "seamless" Omni-shopping experience with more self-checkout kiosks and contactless payment options."We’re always listening to our customers and innovating our in-store, online, and mobile experiences to meet and exceed their expectations," said Janey Whiteside, EVP, and Chief Customer Officer, Walmart, in a blog post. We want their time with us to be enjoyable, and we’re working hard to create ways for them easily toggle between shopping channels – or use them together."Whiteside said the new design was inspired by "airport wayfinding systems as best-in-class examples of how to navigate large groups of people." 836
WASHINGTON — Ivanka Trump has been deposed by attorneys alleging that President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration committee misused donor funds. A new court filing, first reported by CNN Wednesday, notes that Ivanka Trump, the president’s oldest daughter and a senior White House adviser, was interviewed Tuesday by attorneys from the Washington, D.C., attorney general’s office. The office has filed a lawsuit alleging waste of the nonprofit’s funds, accusing the committee of making more than million in improper payments to the president’s Washington, D.C., hotel for event space during the week of the inauguration in 2017.In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump confirmed that she had met with the D.C. attorney general in connection with the investigation. She said she shared an email with investigators in which she asked staff at the hotel to charge a "fair market rate" for hotel rooms."This 'inquiry' is another politically motivated demonstration of vindictiveness & waste of taxpayer dollars," Trump said. 1027
