SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. It's not clear if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash.A portion of I-805 was closed as crews cleared the scene, but was reopened before 7 a.m. Saturday. 855

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. He's spent several years working on the East Coast as well since his graduation. 984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with a death at a Rancho Pe?asquitos home stemming from a reported fight at the residence.San Diego police said officers were called to a home in the 12500 block of Darkwood Rd. in Rancho Penasquitos just before 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in response to a reported fight at the house.According to police, a man called 911 to report his 23-year-old son, Wyatt Austin Lane, had been in a fight with a guest at their home earlier in the day.Regarding the fight, the father reported that his son told him “the guest had lost and never regained consciousness,” according to police.Officers arrived to find a deceased male inside a bedroom with “apparent trauma to his body,” police said. The victim was not immediately identified.Lane was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.SDPD Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the incident. 921

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 6.6% in November, down from 7.5% in October and above the year-ago estimate of 2.9%, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 7.9% for California, down from 9% in October. The rate is 6.4% for the nation, down from 6.6% during the same period.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 14,300 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,412,000 to 1,426,300 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,500 to 9,200.The region lost 97,700 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.The November data reported Friday does not include regional stay-at-home orders which Gov. Gavin Newsom put in place for California regions this month with fewer than 15% of their intensive care unit beds available. Thursday's data from the state claimed Southern California had filled its ICU beds as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens, but San Diego County health officials reported 16% of local beds were still available.Trade, transportation and utilities led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 8,200. Retail trade, up 6,500, and transportation, warehousing and utilities, up 1,800, logged increases in jobs. Within the category of retail trade, clothing and clothing accessories stores -- gained 1,500 -- and general merchandise stores -- up 1,200 -- were large contributors to month-over job gains.
