INDIANAPOLIS -- Two people were arrested early Friday morning after they broke into a house and someone in the home held them at gunpoint, police say.The incident happened at around 1:30 a.m. in the 5000 block of Clemens Place. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say the home was burglarized in the overnight hours Wednesday into Thursday by the same two suspects. Both the male and female suspects were arrested without further incident and police are investigating.    535

IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new study claims that hookah could be more dangerous than other forms of smoking. According to the University of California study, one in five college students in the US and Europe have tried it. According to researchers who conducted the study, one draw from a pipe can contain as many substances as an entire cigarette. “Hookah mainstream smoke – that which is directly inhaled by the user – has many toxic and harmful chemicals, such as nicotine, which can lead to tobacco addiction; irritating carbonyl compounds; and benzine, a known carcinogen,” said lead author Veronique Perraud, a UCI assistant project scientist in the Department of Chemistry. “And due to the greater volume inhaled for every puff and the longer duration of a smoking session, the hookah oftentimes delivers a higher dose of those chemicals to the smoker.”The study also found that the hookah produces an outsized amount of carbon monoxide mainly due to the burning charcoal. According to the university, the study is the first to look at ultrafine particles. Particles researchers say pose a significant health risk. “One of the big myths about hookah usage is that the water in the bowl actually filters out the toxic chemicals, providing a shield for the smoker,” Perraud noted. “In the study, we show that this is not the case for most of the gases and that, possibly due to its cooling effect, water actually promotes ultrafine particle formation.” 1465

INDIANAPOLIS -- 14 offenders at the Indiana Women's Prison are now enrolled in a year-long program that will teach them how to create web applications.The non-profit "Last Mile" is offering the software engineering training. Governor Eric Holcomb joined members of the first class on Thursday, along with Last Mile board members, including rapper and entrepreneur MC Hammer, to kick off the program."I've been in and out of DOC a few times in my life in the past, so I know firsthand about some of the stumbling blocks that exist. Therefore, when I heard about this program, it just really inspired me to apply, because I want to be a success," said Stacy Jennings, a Last Mile participant.Fifty women applied for the program but only 14 were selected.The idea is to arm the women with the skills needed to knock down barriers and land a job once their time behind bars is done.Business and community partners will offer internships."What I hope to get is a new beginning. The opportunity to be able to support myself, be financially stable and also help others to know it's never too late to keep moving forward," Jennings said. Introduction on coding in the Indiana Women's Prison starts on Monday. Now, recounts and certification of the results will take a bit longer.With races too close to call in Arizona, Nevada and Georgia, Pennsylvania became the battleground that tipped the Electoral College count in Biden’s favor Saturday afternoon.But within hours of declaring victory, President Donald Trump released a statement saying, “Joe Biden has not been certified the winner of any state.”“Technically it's true. Certifying election results takes a while,” said Kira Lerner, the managing editor of Vote Beat, a non-partisan, non-profit covering election administration and voting.“Canvassing is the process of counting the ballots,” said Lerner. “It's what election officials are doing across the country right now. They're working tirelessly, overnight in some cases, to make sure that every single vote is counted in the certification process. Each state has a different deadline.”Certification happens after canvassing – whereby election officials verify that every single ballot was counted and there were no clerical errors. But tallying has taken longer due to record turnout and a surge in mail-in ballots.Still, six states have a deadline of within one week of the election to certify their results and have already done so. (Delaware, Virginia, Vermont, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Louisiana).In 26 states and Washington D.C., the certification deadline is between November 10 and the 30. In other states, like Georgia, the secretary of state has already said that he will be seeking a recount on Donald Trump's behalf.”Lerner says legal challenges and recounts will likely fail to change the outcome of the election.
