SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Playgrounds in San Diego County can reopen to the public Wednesday, despite initially being closed under COVID-19 restrictions, after state health officials reversed course.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, led a group of a dozen legislators who sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom last week urging him to remove playgrounds from the stay-at-home order. They claimed opening playgrounds "is necessary for the mental and physical health of children to have opportunities to expend their physical energy and play." They also noted that in some low-income neighborhoods, "families may have little to no outdoor space of their own available."Newsom and the California Department of Public Health revised statewide public health guidelines on Wednesday to allow for public playgrounds to remain open."Every parent knows how important playgrounds are for our youngest Californians," Gonzalez said. "A huge thank you to Governor Newsom for hearing our collective concern and rethinking how we can open play structures for our kids."Playgrounds were closed earlier in the pandemic before being reopened in September. Then, with a spike in case rates and the state's issuance of a regional stay-at-home order, which took effect late Sunday night across all of Southern California, playgrounds closed again.Pressure from parents and legislators have now caused the state to reopen the playgrounds.According to the state's website, "playgrounds may remain open to facilitate physically distanced personal health and wellness through outdoor exercise. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego.The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University will not begin any of its fall sports earlier than Sept. 26 due to the ongoing pandemic, the university's athletics department announced Thursday.This follows guidance from the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, which decided Wednesday to adjust conference team schedules to allow additional monitoring of ongoing COVID-19 developments and adjustments to keep student-athletes safe.The SDSU Aztecs football team will shrink its schedule to 10 games and most other fall sports will only play conference opponents."The Mountain West athletic directors and the conference office worked hard to develop a game plan for fall sports that will allow student- athletes to have a great experience and take in to account their health and well-being," said SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker. "Starting the season later allows us the opportunity to learn from professional sports and other conferences and continue to develop the best protocols possible to ensure the safest return to play model possible."The conference and school schedules align with the NCAA Board of Governors' directions, also released this week. The fall season will also continue to be evaluated in the context of the virus on campuses and within communities, and will be subject to directives from local, state and federal leaders."Should further modifications become necessary, including delay or cancellation of competition, the MW Board of Directors is prepared to do so," a conference statement said.The football team, coming off a 9-3 season including a blowout bowl win against Central Michigan, is also dealing with a new but familiar head coach.Head Coach Brady Hoke coached the Aztecs for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way.
