Dog owners need to stop feeding dogs pig ear treats to end the spread of Salmonella to both humans and dogs nationwide, the CDC said on Wednesday. The CDC's statement comes weeks after previous advisories indicating that dozens have become sick after their dogs consumed pig ear treats. Even after the CDC said two weeks ago that there is a possible correlation between pig ear treats for dogs and Salmonella illness in humans, 34 people have reported an illness. In total, 127 have become ill in connection to this Salmonella outbreak, the CDC says. Nearly 30% of the illnesses have resulted in hospitalizations, the CDC says. The CDC said that the treats came from many different suppliers and is the likely source of this outbreak. The CDC offers the following advice:Tips to stay healthy while feeding your dogAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water right after handling pet food or treats, including pig ears. When possible, store pet food and treats away from where human food is stored or prepared and away from the reach of young children.Don’t use your pet’s feeding bowl to scoop food. Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon, or cup.Always follow any storage instructions on pet food bags or containers.Play safelyDon’t let your pet lick your mouth or face after it eats pet food or treats.Don’t let your pet lick any open wounds or areas with broken skin.If you do play with your pet after it has just eaten, wash your hands and any part of your body it licked with soap and water.Shop safelyAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching unpackaged pet treats, such as food or treats in bulk bins.Take extra care around young childrenChildren younger than 5 years old should not touch or eat pet food or treats.Young children are at risk for illness because their immune systems are still developing and because they are more likely than others to put their fingers or other items into their mouths.Adults should supervise handwashing for young childrenHow do I know if my dog has Salmonella infection? Some dogs may have Salmonella infection but may not look sick. Dogs with a Salmonella infection usually have diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus. Affected animals may seem more tired than usual, and may have a fever or vomit. If your dog or cat has these signs of illness or you are concerned that your pet may have Salmonellainfection, please contact your pet’s veterinarian. 2439

Curtis Whitson has two strangers to thank for his family being alive today. Two brave hikers plucked a lime green bottle from a river and alerted authorities about the SOS message they found inside.Whitson, his 13-year-old son and girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez, had decided to spend Father's Day weekend backpacking the Arroyo Seco River. They spent their days boulder-hopping and floating the river on inner tubes, and their nights sleeping under the stars, bundled in lightweight mummy bags, with mesh bags over their heads to keep bugs at bay.Whitson was in familiar territory: he takes as many as 20 backpacking trips to the central California coastal forest each summer.Throughout the trip, the family's goal was to reach the Arroyo Seco narrows, float through the water shoot and down the waterfall before joining friends to float the last couple of miles down to a campground. After two and half days of lugging 50-pound packs, the family reached the narrows, a spot in the river surrounded by solid rock up to 40 feet high on each side. But the water currents were too strong for them to safely pass through."My heart sank when I realized the volume of water was just too dangerous to make rappelling down possible," Whitson said. Typically, he said, there's a rope going through climbing carabiners that have been bolted into the rocks."This time, the rope was gone," Whitson told CNN.A lucky tossAfter trying to hike up and over, Whitson and his son kept hitting dead ends. There was no way out.The group of three couldn't see anything past a bend in the canyon walls, but they heard voices on the other side. They tried yelling for help. They tried carving a message into a stick and throwing it over. But they soon realized a stick wouldn't be enough, so they came up with a new way to get someone's attention.Whitson spotted a lime green Nalgene water bottle and carved 'HELP' into the durable plastic exterior. Ramirez, his girlfriend, had brought scratch paper with her to keep score when they played games. She scratched out a quick note and popped the piece of paper inside the bottle."With one lucky toss, it went right over the waterfall," Whitson said. The group retreated back up the river to a small beach where they had earlier stopped for lunch. They had been able to float down from the beach in about two minutes, but it took about 30 minutes to get back upstream. Before settling down, the family spread out their blue tarp in a clearing and assembled white rocks to spell out "SOS." As the sun set, they used a headlamp to keep that message illuminated.'It was one of the best feelings'Some time after midnight the trio was awakened by the sound of a California Highway Patrol helicopter overhead."This is Search and Rescue. You have been found," someone said over the loudspeaker."It was one of the best feelings," Whitson gushed, "nothing was sweeter than those words uttered by CHP."Whitson said he was told two men found the bottle with the family's note, floated down to the trailhead, then hiked a couple of miles and reached the campground where they alerted the camp host. That host told Whitson about the hikers, but added the two left before the rescue without giving their names.During the rescue, the CHP crew aboard that chopper used night vision goggles and FLIR (forward looking infrared) teachnology to spot the campfire and located Whitson and his family, according to Flight Officer Paramedic Todd Bainbridge, who was on the mission. The family was told to stay put and stay warm, and a rescue crew arrived early the next morning. Whitson still gets emotional recalling the rescue and his gratitude for both the crew members and his family. Now, he wants to find the two hikers who found his family's message and saved them. 3773

DENVER, Colorado — If you are planning on hiking in a national park or head to the airport to travel this weekend be prepared. Federal workers are warning that the government shutdown is starting to impact safety."For air traffic controllers, you only get one take,” said James Marinitti with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. “They work in a mistake-free environment where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.”With 3,000 air traffic support staff being told not to come to work there are fewer safety inspectors. That can lead to delays like repairing runway lights that guide pilots to the installation of new technology that helps controllers communicate with pilots."Radar, preventative maintenance -- these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy," Marinitti said.TSA employees are among the thousands of essential government workers required to show up without pay. Senior officials have confirmed with CNN that hundreds of TSA employees are calling out sick since the shutdown. We reached out to the TSA at Denver International Airport about the impacts but have not heard back.At Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors are arriving only to be disappointed.“We are out here to visit. We see the sign and realize it's closed. We came all the way from Vancouver, Canada, and it's kinda disappointing,” said Stanley Marayan.Trash cans are locked up at the park and roads are closed because there are no workers to plow them. The National Park Service is warning visitors to use extreme caution during the shutdown because emergency services are limited. At Yosemite National Park, one death wasn’t reported for a week because of the government shutdown."America is great. We want to explore America, so for us, I think this is crazy they are closing the parks. Nature is beautiful here," Marayan said. 1964
