SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry Wednesday increased her lead for second place for the third straight day over Councilman Scott Sherman in the San Diego mayoral primary election. The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters look likely to be choosing between Assemblyman Todd Gloria and Bry.Should Gloria and Bry face off, it would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Gloria, a former San Diego city councilman and interim mayor, has a more than 64,000-vote lead over both Bry and Sherman and is virtually assured to make it onto the November general election ballot.Bry currently has a 444-vote lead over Sherman, a Republican. With a projected 25,000 ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes in the rear-view, November is looking all but assured to be a showdown between the two Democrats. 1172

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College. Vanbuskirk was identified as a suspect through public-access genealogical databases, which prosecutors described as similar to the technology used to identify and capture Joseph James DeAngelo, otherwise known as the Golden State Killer.RELATED: Suspect in San Diego, Riverside County rape series pleads guiltyPolice said DNA evidence previously linked the San Diego and Riverside county cases, but the identity of the perpetrator was not established until last year.Vanbuskirk was arrested in his home state in May.Two of his victims from the San Diego area spoke at his sentencing hearing, as well as the mother of his first victim.Jane Doe 1's mother said her daughter was attacked at age 18 while jogging on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, while Jane Doe 2 and Jane Doe 3 said they were attacked in their homes. All the victims described being attacked by a masked Vanbuskirk who threatened to kill them if they screamed, leaving them with emotional trauma that rendered them constantly in fear.Jane Doe 2 said, "The rapist lived free for 24 years, while the victims were imprisoned in our own minds."Vanbuskirk spoke on his own behalf, saying "I do apologize sincerely" to the victims and that he hoped "that they can find it in their hearts to one day forgive me." He also apologized to his family "for the shame I've brought them." 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An annual reading program by United Way of San Diego County helped nearly 500 students in the City Heights neighborhood improve their literacy skills, the nonprofit announced today. The "Readers in the Heights" summer reading initiative included 479 students from elementary schools in the City Heights area, a sharp increase from the program's 40 participants just two years ago. The program is intended to combat "summer slide," when students lose literacy gains they made during the school year. According to United Way, 86 percent of students assessed at the beginning and end of the program maintained or improved their reading comprehension."We use proven assessment tools to measure impact and they show that these literacy practices have made significant progress in student reading," United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki said. "These practices help close learning gaps and open new worlds by creating happy, excited and confident readers."United Way partnered with the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Police Department, PrimeTime SAY San Diego and Words Alive to produce the program.Members of the literacy group Words Alive trained members of the program's staff on how to implement evidence-based reading practices across the program's seven sites, including four elementary schools in and around City Heights. The students totaled nearly 10,000 hours of literacy learning during the 20-day program and received a total of 900 free books."Research shows that children who don't have access to books, camps or enrichment programs during the summer recess can lose more than two months of reading skills and can fall behind almost three months in their learning," said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Each year, the Readers in the Heights literacy initiative works to increase summer learning opportunities, and with the help of partners and volunteers, we are able to make a huge impact over four weeks. We look forward to continuing to expand the program in the future."   2122

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials broke ground Monday on the Bay Terraces Senior Center, a project that local residents have advocated for since the 1990s. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Cate were on hand to mark the beginning of construction on the 3,400-square-foot facility. Once completed, the million senior center is set to include amenities such as a multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen. The facility will serve seniors in Paradise Hills, Bay Terraces and Skyline, according to the city. ``A decade ago, city leaders laid down a thin layer of gravel in preparation for a senior center in southeastern San Diego that was promised but never delivered,'' Faulconer said. ``Today we are making good on that promise and building a center that will be as great as the communities it will serve.'' Faulconer revived the project in 2016 and city officials expect it to be the city's first building to produce as much energy as it uses by leveraging solar panels on the facility's roof. According to the city, the project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program. ``This project illustrates the hard work and power of our community to organize and hold elected officials accountable,'' Montgomery said. ``We are pleased to see the Bay Terraces Senior Center start construction and we look forward to the grand opening and visiting the center for many years to come.'' City officials expect the facility to be completed in October 2020. 1567
