DAVOS - China will endeavor to maintain steady and fairly fast economic growth and deepen the reform of the economic system, Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan said here Thursday."To prevent overheating of the economy and inflation is our top priority for macro control this year. BEIJING - State Forestry Administration investigators found more than 100 suspected footprints of a South China tiger on Friday in Shaanxi Province, where photos of the big cat taken by a farmer have caused a national controversy over their authenticity.A South China tiger [File photo] The Beijing Morning Post reported on Monday that Zhang Bin, a local forestry official who accompanied the investigators, said the team also found a skeleton suspected to belong to a young tiger."It's like the skeleton of a cat," said Zhang, adding the bones had been sent to Beijing for DNA testing. "But experts said with a length of 50 centimeters, a cat would have grown tooth bones. This skeleton hasn't (teeth), it's like a cub feline.""The experts said there is a great probability that it belongs to a South China tiger cub."He said the footprints found in Zhenping County ranged from 12 to 16 cm, with toes. "To my experience in investigating the wild, they are tiger footprints. They belong to more than one tiger."Zhang said the experts had also developed rubbings of the footprints for further analysis.In October, a farmer in Zhenping County, in the northern Shaanxi Province, claimed he snapped photos of a tiger in the forest near his home. The provincial forestry bureau later cited experts as verifying it was a South China tiger. The subspecies was believed to have been extinct in the wild for more than three decades.However, many scientists and Internet users have denounced the pictures as fake. In November, one netizen posted an on-line picture of a tiger from a new year calendar and claimed the two tigers were identical.Despite this, the provincial forestry department insisted the tiger in the photo existed in Zhenping County. The Beijing-based China Photographers Society, however, confirmed the images were not real.Last month, the State Forestry Administration dispatched an expert panel to Zhenping to carry out a field investigation. GENEVA -- China on Tuesday got its first judge on the  World Trade Organization (WTO)'s highest court, six years after the country joined the Geneva-based body.Zhang YuejiaoChinese lawyer Zhang Yuejiao was formally appointed by the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) as a member of the seven-person Appellate Body, which issues final rulings in trade disputes, WTO sources said.Jennifer Hillman of the United States, Lilia Bautista of the Philippines and Shotaro Oshima of Japan were also appointed as new members of the top court at a DSB meeting on Tuesday.The appointments were made according to the Dispute Settlement Understanding which stipulates that the Appellate Body shall " comprise persons of recognized authority, with demonstrated expertise in law, international trade and the subject matter of the WTO agreements generally," a WTO statement said.The WTO said Hillman and Bautista would formally join the top court next month, while Zhang and Oshima would join in June. They can serve up to two four-year terms.Zhang, 63, is professor of law at Shantou University in China. She is also an arbitrator on China's International Trade and Economic Arbitration Commission and practises law as a private attorney.Zhang once held positions at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce as well as at the Asian Development Bank.

BEIJING -- Chinese investors should be suspicious of phone calls, online messages and websites touting highly profitable stocks, the Ministry of Public Security warned on Tuesday. "As China's stock prices are soaring constantly, there has been a rise in the number of cases of illegal activities in the stock market, which has undermined the normal market order and threatened investor security," the ministry said in a notice on its official website. The government has repeatedly warned investors of illegal securities companies that swindle clients of funds with claims of high returns. The ministry said scam artists used Internet and phone calls to illegally tout stocks, funds or stock ownership to investors. The swindlers charged unwary investors high fees for fake stock tips and then quickly disappeared after having collected a huge sum of money. The funds or stock ownership, which were touted online or by phone, were often nonexistent, the ministry said. Investors were also hoodwinked into buying fake "initial offerings" of stocks that were not listed on the exchanges. Other scams include cases in which investors' shares were stolen and sold by criminals, who had stolen investors' account numbers and codes. The ministry urged investors to be alert and not to trust promoters who touted unrealistic high returns, or accept stock tips from unidentified persons online or on the phone. It also urged investors to be aware of computer security and to stop trading immediately when discovering a computer virus. The China Securities Regulatory Commission has pledged to curb illegal trading and fraud in the stock market. In February, the State Council approved the China Securities Regulatory Commission to lead a cross departmental team to crack down on illegal securities business.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has called a halt to all TV and radio programs on plastic surgery or sex-change operations.The administration issued a notice on Thursday that forbids programs with such "indecent themes and bloody and explicit scenes".As the decision states, it is forbidden to plan, program or broadcast any programs about plastic surgery or sex-change operations.The decision came as growing numbers of local TV stations decide to broadcast such programs, which have attracted complaints from many viewers.For example, Sun Min, a viewer in South China's Guangdong Province, said she found the scenes of plastic surgery in "New Agreement on Beauty", broadcast by a local TV station, to be "horrifying and sickening"."Ongoing programs of this kind should be stopped immediately," said the notice. "Any party that violates the rule will be punished."The administration has already stopped broadcasts of "New Agreement on Beauty".In response, He Yi, an official with the Guangdong TV Station, said that the program's production team understands the administration's decision and would abide by it.The administration's move came a week after it banned "The First Heartthrob", a local talent show broadcast in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, due to its vulgar content.The program caters to "low-grade interests", with the judges and songs on the program often featuring bad language.The administration said this seriously damages the image of the television industry and has a negative social influence.The director of the program has already been fired by Chongqing TV station.
