Three UCLA basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, brother of Lakers guard Lonzo Ball and son of Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball -- could be facing significant prison time if convicted of shoplifting in China, according to a report Tuesday. The trio has been released on bail, Sports Illustrated reported. On Tuesday, ESPN reported Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested in UCLA on charges of shoplifting. UCLA is in China to play its season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Friday."The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before moving on to Shanghai on Wednesday," ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported.Yahoo Sports contacted a lawyer familiar with the Chinese legal system who said each player could face 3 to 10 years in prison if convicted of shoplifting.Another individual familiar with Chinese law told Yahoo Sports that "Chinese prosecutors enjoy a 99.2 percent conviction rate."Ball, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, followed in his brother Lonzo's footsteps by committing to play college basketball at UCLA. Lonzo was selected by the Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. 1310
There's a new way to do contact tracing in the works and it could make a difference for health care providers during flu season.Vibrent Health just got a contract with major health institutions to develop the platform.Part of the idea is for users to enter their symptoms and find out if they're more likely to have the flu or COVID-19.“Health care facilities do get bombarded with perhaps people thinking that they have COVID when they just had flu, so the idea is how do you help the health care organizations to reduce some of the burden,” said Praduman Jain, founder and CEO of Vibrent Health. The technology is designed to be embedded in other apps that organizations and intuitions already use, like a university application for students.“So, make it easy for people and don't try to change their behavior,” said Jain. “They are already using certain applications that this can become a part of.”The app uses Wi-Fi networks to find out if you may have been close to someone with the virus. It could help cut some contact tracing work for public health departments. Instead of calling everyone that may have come in contact with the virus, the app can report that information.“There are only so many people, so many human beings, so many people that public health departments can hire to do that contact tracing, so technology becomes really important,” said Jain.Development is still in its early stages. Right now, the focus is on fine-tuning the algorithms to evolve along with changing data on the coronavirus.Broader testing is expected in the first few months of 2021. 1585

Thousands of California's weary wine country residents are confronting yet another devastating wildfire. The Glass Fire has scorched more than 66 square miles and destroyed about 95 structures. It's the fourth major fire in three years in the Napa-Sonoma area. The region is nearing the third anniversary of a 2017 wildfire that killed 22 people. For many, seeing the blaze come over the iconic ridges was a painful reminder of the losses in 2017. The sheriff acknowledged “fire fatigue." Further north, a wildfire burning in rural Shasta County has killed three people and destroyed nearly 150 buildings.Since the beginning of the year, there have been over 8,100 wildfires that have burned well over 3.8 million acres in California, Cal Fire said. This wildfire season has claimed the lives of 29 people after three more people died in the Zogg fire this week. 871
There was briefly another participant swooping into Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate. For several minutes, a fly landed in Vice President Mike Pence’s hair, not moving as he answered questions about racial injustice and whether justice has been done in the death of Breonna Taylor.Conversation about the fly briefly dominated corners of Twitter, where debate watchers discussed their distraction and inability to focus on Pence and California Sen. Kamala Harris’ answers. Some joked about the need to test the fly for the coronavirus, as it had skirted the plexiglass partitions separating the candidates and moderator.Wednesday night’s intruder wasn’t the first to take center stage at an election year debate. In 2016, a fly briefly landed between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s eyes during a town hall-style debate with now-President Donald Trump. The Biden campaign used the fly incident as a fundraising opportunity: 944
