Judith Krantz, whose best-selling romance novels told racy tales of the rich, died of natural causes Saturday, her publicist said. She was 91.Krantz is known for her novels "Mistral's Daughter" (1983), "I'll Take Manhattan" (1986), "Scruples" (1978) and "Princess Daisy" (1980). She's sold more than 80 million copies of her novels, and they've been translated into over 50 languages, her publicist said. She wrote her first book at age 50, launching her into the romance novelist stratosphere.Krantz, originally from New York, became wealthy from the sale of her books. In a letter to readers in her 2001 autobiography, "Sex and Shopping: The Confessions of a Nice Jewish Girl," she said she had a different life from the majority of women of her generation and background."While I seemed like another 'nice Jewish girl,' underneath that convenient cover I'd traveled my own, inner-directed path and had many a spicy and secret adventure," she wrote. "I grew up in a complicated tangle of privilege, family problems, and tormented teenaged sexuality."Krantz was the oldest of three children, and the "daughter of worldly and cultivated parents" as she writes in her autobiography. Though her interest in clothes began when she was a child, she said she was unpopular growing up, having very few friends until she reached high school. She wrote that those years had been "burned into her psyche.""I'll probably feel slightly insecure as I breathe my last, still wondering if I'm wearing exactly the right thing," she wrote.In 1948, Krantz graduated from Wellesley College and spent the following year in Paris working in fashion public relations. When she returned to New York she began her career in magazine journalism.Krantz worked primarily in fashion, working as the fashion editor for Good Housekeeping and writing for outlets such as Cosmopolitan, for which she wrote her best-known article, "The Myth of the Multiple Orgasm." She was a journalist for about 30 years before she published "Scruples," her first novel.The book, which chronicled the over-the-top lifestyle of the people who work in a Beverly Hills boutique, became a huge success, remaining on The New York Times Best Sellers list for more than a year. Her novels were known for their focus on the wealthy, love and sex. Some of her novels were produced into television miniseries as well.Krantz married Steve Krantz, a film and television producer, in 1954. Therefore, "they believe they don’t have to answer to any government authority, including courts, taxing entities, motor vehicle departments, or law enforcement."It often makes their interactions with police difficult — so much so, that the FBI considers The Sovereign Citizen Movement a form of domestic terrorism. Police in Sugar Creek, Missouri released body-cam footage Tuesday of one such recent interaction.Aaron Fletcher identifies as a sovereign citizen. He refused to pull over for police, who were attempting to arrest him for outstanding warrants, and refused to get out of his car after pulling over near his home.Police eventually broke windows on the car and pulled Fletcher out."I have represented a few over the years," criminal defense attorney John Picerno said. "Their No. 1 belief is that they are not subject to the control of United States laws, and that's simply not true."For people who hold such beliefs, interactions with police can be confrontational."You add into the mix someone who doesn't believe law enforcement officers have legal authority to apprehend, It's extremely difficult and ... that's why you see situations where you see officers using the force that they use to get that person out of the vehicle," Picerno said.Dr. John Hamilton — a retired Kansas City, Missouri, police officer and criminal justice professor at Park University — said officers need to be familiar with the group or things can turn ugly."You don't know what you are dealing with either." Hamilton said. "You don't know if someone who really is well-versed on all the laws that they read, the federal laws, that say they are empowered to do that. Then, some don't know those kind of things, but just decide that is sounds like something interesting to do."It's also difficult for attorneys who represent "sovereign citizens.""It's harmful for them, because they say those things in open court, they are seen as being in defiance of our laws and of our government," Picerno said. "Naturally, prosecutors and judges don't take very kindly to that kind of attitude."Hamilton has advice to anyone who thinks they are above the law and are part of the movement."I would tell them the same thing I would tell anybody, which is to cooperate — to make sure you show your hands, to do what the officer tells you to do as long as it lawful, and appropriate," he said. "If you have problems, you can settle it at a later time."Many police departments are working to address how to deal with such individuals. The KCPD trains recruits at the academy how to identify someone who is a sovereign citizen and also has an investigative unit that deals with incidents involving the movement. 2826

Iron Man is coming to life! Well, maybe not the superhero himself, but his iconic suit is being recreated. A group of engineering students and the Discovery Channel teamed up to make a real-life Iron Man suit.Adam Savage, host of Savage Builds on the Discovery Channel, recruited Craig Brice, a professor from Colorado’s School of Mines, who is known for his teachings in 3D metal printing.Jesse Adamczyk is one of 14 students selected to work on the Iron Man Project, and he was excited to be working with Savage.“We got to start working alongside Adam Savage and started fitting pieces around him and working right next to him. Right next to this legend,” Adamczyk says.Marvel Studios sent the students computer-generated imagery from the hit movie. Each piece of the 250-piece suit of armor was created from 3D printers and made out of titanium. They poured titanium powder into the printer and used a laser to cut out each piece.“The hands of the suit were very challenging,” Adamczyk says. “The hands, each had 30 parts, and the actual hand was about this thick of material.”This creation was such a phenomenal undertaking, because until recently, 3D printed metal parts were used only in military aircrafts and commercial vehicles.After three months of work, the team even impressed themselves with their capabilities.
