Special counsel Robert Mueller's confidential report on the Russia investigation is more than 300 pages, according to a Justice Department official and a second source with knowledge of the matter. The Justice Department official described the still-secret report as more than 300 pages, while a second official said it was between 300 and 400 pages, not including exhibits. The page length had been a mystery in the days following the announcement that Mueller had concluded his work last Friday, as the Justice Department continually declined to comment on the page count but called it "comprehensive." Attorney General Bill Barr's four-page summary of Mueller's report provided only few details of how it is structured, describing it as "divided into two parts."Even many members of Congress have been kept in the dark about the breadth of the report until recently.A Justice official confirmed that Barr discussed the page length on a call with House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler on Wednesday. Nadler would only say the report was "very substantial" and less than 1,000 pages when asked by reporters.Barr on Sunday released a four-page memo stating that Mueller's investigation did not establish that the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government before the election, but Democrats have demanded to see Mueller's full report and the underlying evidence.A small team at the Justice Department is working on determining what portions of the report can be made public, after scrubbing it for grand jury and other material related to ongoing investigations. 1586
Roughly three weeks ago the special counsel's team told Attorney General Bill Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that Robert Mueller would not be reaching a conclusion on obstruction of justice, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The source said that conclusion was "unexpected" and not what Barr had anticipated. The information also means that Barr had a head start on developing his analysis on obstruction of justice well before Mueller delivered his report to the attorney general on Friday. Rosenstein's office has also been heavily involved in overseeing the investigation since its inception. The meeting wasn't about obstruction alone, the source added, and the special counsel's team asked for more time to finish their work, which was granted. The source described it as purely administrative. This story is breaking and will be updated. 883

Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke reiterated his support for a mandatory gun-buyback program of assault-style rifles on Thursday and said, "Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.""We're not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore," the former Texas congressman said during the third Democratic presidential debate, hosted by ABC News."If the high-impact, high-velocity round, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so that you would bleed to death on a battlefield ... when we see that being used against children," O'Rourke said. He recalled talking to a woman in Odessa, Texas, who had watched her 15-year-old daughter bleed to death after she was shot by a man wielding an AR-15 late last month.O'Rourke's comments come in the wake of a string of mass shootings in the United States, including in his hometown of El Paso, where 22 people were gunned down at a Walmart in August. O'Rourke unveiled a proposal weeks after that shooting calling for a national gun registry, a nationwide gun licensing system and the mandatory buyback of assault-style rifles as part of his plan to curb gun violence and the rise of white nationalism. He received praise from his fellow Democratic contenders on Thursday night for his actions following the shooting in El Paso."The way he handled what happened in his hometown -- to look in the eyes," former Vice President Joe Biden said.Fellow Texan Julián Castro praised O'Rourke for "how well he has spoken to the passion and the frustration and the sadness" after the shooting."And Beto, God love you for standing in the middle of that tragedy," said Sen. Kamala Harris of California.Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota said, "I so appreciate what the congressman's been doing."Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey needled O'Rourke later, saying he was sorry it had taken the El Paso shooting for O'Rourke to embrace the position Booker already held, backing a mandatory buyback and national registration.O'Rourke's support for gun licensing is a reversal from May, when he was asked about a similar proposal from Booker and said it "may be too far." 2191
