OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — The Oceanside Main Street program launched a campaign to support local businesses in May and now that restrictions have been extended, so has the fundraiser.Manager Gumaro Escarcega said the goal is for the community to help the community, so they partnered with Whitlock Ink to create t-shirts and masks to sell that say “Oceanside Strong.” Initially, ,000 was raised and a majority of that was distributed to 13 Oceanside small businesses. Escarcega said with restrictions continuing, they made the decision to keep fundraising, so the products are still available.“As the pandemic continues to impact our communities, we felt that we need to send positive messages out there,” said Escarcega.Stacey Holmes owns Otterlei Coastal and said she’s felt the hit of the pandemic, so she was relieved to receive the help from the campaign.“We were able to use the grant for a little buffer, not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring,” she said.She also said that not only is the money-making a difference, but the community is coming together like never before to help each other. She said store owners are encouraging customers to stop by each other’s shops and restaurants, which has also helped.“I’m trying to pay it back forward to, make sure you go visit such and such store, go visit this restaurant or what have you, so even as a business we’re all supporting each other as well,” she said.Escarcega said right now, Main Street is working on another grant program that should be launched in August. On Aug. 26, 2017, 15-year-old Damon Grimes was involved in a police pursuit while driving an ATV. That pursuit ended in a crash on Detroit’s east side that claimed Grimes’ life.Using the Freedom of Information Act, 25-hours worth of video from police body cameras and dash cameras, surveillance video and cellphone video shot by witnesses were released that tell the story of the senseless death. They would not provide footage from the dash cam of the pursuit by MSP Troopers, Mark Bessner and Ethan Berger.At 5:31 p.m., the video shows Damon Grimes riding his ATV down Rossini Avenue and Gratiot in Detroit.Bessner requests priority to chase an ATV. “He flipped. Flipped!” said Detroit Police Officer Williams on the radio.“Yup, tell them there’s an accident,” said DPD Officer Boersman, who was first on the scene.Grimes hit a parked Ford F-150 with his ATV and he flew off the four-wheeler.“He’s got a pulse and he’s breathing,” said Bessner.“0-9, he’s slowed down, we tased him and he crashed out. One of the people inside the Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee where a gunman opened fire said she played dead in order to stay alive.Kayla Shaw, age 21, shared her story with Scripps station WTVF in Nashville three days after three customers and a restaurant employee were killed. "That was a very traumatic experience, and it changed my life," Shaw said. "I went to a store for the first time yesterday, and I was constantly looking over my shoulder and checking my surroundings. Every little noise scared me."Shaw is from Brownsville, Tennessee and was in Nashville to visit her cousins over the weekend.They were at a different Waffle House that morning, but it was so busy that they placed a to-go order at the Murfreesboro location instead.She was paying for her food near the counter when gunshots erupted."I heard a loud pop on my left side, and after that I felt the glass from the window hit my face and I fell on my right side," she remembered. "I laid there, and my first thought was, 'God please don't let me die inside of a Waffle House.'"The young mother showed the scratches to her face from the glass and the bruise on her arm after hitting it against a stool. She said all she could do at that point was close her eyes and pray."The one time during the altercation I opened my eyes, the only thing I saw was the shooter's genitals because he was naked in the direction I was laying. I question why I got to live, but I feel like my actions by playing dead actually helped me live after I heard the gunshot," she emphasized. "My whole body was motionless."Unbeknownst to her, another restaurant patron wrestled the AR-15 from the gunman and likely saved countless people from dying.She hid behind the counter as soon as she no longer heard gunshots."I actually tripped over someone's dead body and I fell right in front of a young lady who had a majority of her leg blown off. I was in such a state of shock, all I could do was pray over her," added Shaw. "She asked me to give her her phone which was under the guy's body I tripped over."When it was clear to go, Shaw frantically ran to the car and drove off with her cousins.It did not take too long before she spotted the naked gunman on the run."I'm speeding though like we're so shocked, and I see the naked shooter on the side of the road. I was almost paralyzed in that moment. It was so terrifying to leave that place and to actually see him on the side of the road walking, while my cousin was on the phone with dispatchers," she said. That same day she got to meet James Shaw (who she is unrelated to), the man credited and honored by Tennessee lawmakers for stopping the shooter from killing others. She described the moment as emotional as both hugged and cried in each other's arms."I continued to express my gratitude to him," she said. "James, on behalf of me and everybody that walked out of the Waffle House, we thank you so much."Travis Reinking, age 29, was arrested for the shooting following a nearly 35-hour long manhunt. The victims he's accused of killing were Taurean Sanderlin, Joe R. Officials in North Carolina now say that seven people have been killed in flash floods prompted by Tropical Storm Eta.The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte. There, at a local campground, three bodies were recovered and another 31 people were rescued. As of Thursday afternoon, an adult and a child were still missing from the campsite.Elsewhere in Alexander County, another person died when floodwaters caused a bridge to collapse. It was one of four bridges in the country that were swept away by floods, and one of the collapses was captured live by a local TV news channel.The Observer reports that two other deaths were recorded in Iredell County when floodwaters caused a pickup truck to hydroplane and collided with an oncoming car.The New York Times reports that the seventh fatality occurred in Wake County — near Raleigh — where witnesses say a child who had been playing near a creek drowned in a flash flood.According to The Weather Channel, the Charlotte area received seven inches of rain on Thursday, causing creeks and rivers to overflow quickly. Five counties in North Carolina declared states of emergency.The National Hurricane Center reports that Eta, now a post-tropical cyclone, is currently located just offshore of the Carolinas.
