SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Not only does HPV account for six different cancer types, almost 100 percent of cervical cancers and in men, now those instances are rising for head and neck cancer, " said Dr. Ezra Cohen, who is the Associate Director for Translational Science at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that about 14 million people get a new HPV infection every year in the U.S. Nearly all men and women who have ever had sex get at least one type of genital HPV at some time in their lives. The Immunotherapy Foundation has focused its efforts on three categories:  1321

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California continue to rise sharply as prices throughout the rest of the U.S. continue to fall. According to GasBuddy, the national average is down two cents, currently costing .65 per gallon. In California, the average as of Sunday is .98 per gallon and could hit by late Sunday or Monday, GasBuddy says. In San Diego County, the average price per gallon has increased by more than 40 cents over the last 13 days, AAA reports. The jolting increase in gas prices is a result of lower supplies caused by maintenance issues at several California refineries. The issues are reportedly affecting the Chevron and Marathon refineries in Los Angeles County at the same time. It's unclear when normal operations will resume. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of residents at “The Cliffs” mobile home park in Allied Gardens are fed up after living without running water since Thursday. The community consists solely of 55+ senior citizens, and many of them live alone or have limited mobility. "It's really kind of a pain in the neck,” 85-year-old resident William Shakespeare said. Like many of his neighbors living in the lower portion of the Cliffs, Shakespeare lost water since early Thursday. Luckily for him, his longtime girlfriend Suiko Paul is quite mobile. She became the go-to person for water supply for the entire street. "Elderly people live here. They don't drive. Somebody has to help them,” Paul said. She was been swamped. "She hauls water like crazy,” laughed Shakespeare. 10News met the on-site property manager as he and two others were digging a hole in the asphalt. He stepped away from the camera to tell us two old pipes burst on opposite ends of the mobile home park Thursday morning. Since then, he said he had been doing everything he can to fix the problem. But residents like Shakespeare and Paul did not want to see three people trying to fix a major water leak problem affecting more than 200 residents. "He's been here since Thursday, and they've been digging, but they're not sure where they're digging,” Shakespeare said. Many residents appreciated that the manager was trying to handle the problem himself, but they said it had gotten out of control. Like many of her neighbors, Paul said she had not taken a shower for four days, and she had gone to a friend’s house to wash dishes.The Red Cross began mobilizing at the clubhouse and doing door to door well-fare checks. But for many of the seniors, patience is running out."It seems like forever…. Not having water, I don't know what could be worse. Not having air, I guess,” Shakespeare said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI investigators are seeking the public's help in identifying the suspect of a College Area bank robbery Wednesday.The suspect walked into Citibank at 5998 El Cajon Blvd. just after 3 p.m., approached a teller, and verbally demanded cash, according to the FBI.After receiving a sum of cash, the suspect fled on foot.The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his late 20s to early 30s, with large build and standing about 5-foot 6-inches. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, grey sweatpants, sunglasses, gloves, tennis shoes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For some people who catch the coronavirus, their symptoms can last for months. Researchers are calling these patients who now test negative but still experience symptoms "long haulers." Doctors are calling the long hauler problem a big mystery.It's a new phenomenon of a new virus, stumping even the brightest researchers and doctors."I have to tell him, I don't know," Dr. Zehui Tan with Sharp Rees Stealy Rancho Bernardo said.Dr. Tan is treating an otherwise very healthy 24-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 in September. She says after he quarantined for 14 days, most of his symptoms went away. He retook the test, and it came back negative. But the good news was short-lived. A month later, he ended up in the ER once again."His blood test is normal, chest is fine, but they found an abnormality in the EKG -- an inflammation of the heart. It can be a complication after COVID," Dr. Tan said.Researchers believe about 10% of COVID-19 patients see a relapse in symptoms. These "long haulers" now test negative for COVID but still experience symptoms that include coughing, fatigue, body aches, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell, and brain fog."Almost three months after the COVID infection, he's still not feeling right," Dr. Tan said.Researchers say there does not seem to be a consistent reason or type of patient who becomes long-haulers."We see people die long from COVID, and I have a 92-year-old just fully recovered, so you just never know what's going to happen in your body once you get this COVID," Dr. Tan said.So it could be a long road ahead until her patient feels like himself again."We don't know," Dr. Tan said. "The only thing we can give is offer lots of support, treat them symptomatically, and then just watch and wait."Experts say patients who had bad respiratory issues may develop permanent lung damage.
