INDIANAPOLIS -- Ninety minutes after Tonya Holtgrave dropped her dog, Titan, off at Barkefellers on the west side, the doggy daycare called to tell her that Titan appeared to be injured.Holtgrave said they told her that they weren't sure what happened, but she needed to take him to a veterinary hospital immediately."I was just shocked when they called me and said he was hurt, and it's kind of been a shock ever since," she said.According to medical records, Titan fractured his tibia in both legs."They let my dog get hurt," Holtgrave said "That's negligence on their part, not mine."She said the vets told her Titan will need an expensive surgery. She wants the company to help pay for it."I just can't afford that right now, ,000 for surgery," Holtgrave said. "I am already out over ,000 just in all of these vet bills and stuff, and his medicine."Barkefellers said they checked their surveillance cameras and did not see any point where the dog might have gotten injured under their care. Holtgrave said she had Titan's vet call the facility. The manager said they can't pay for anything unless they have proof that Titan was injured on their property."The other vet had already told him it was a traumatic injury, that he didn't walk in there with two broken legs," Holtgrave said. The owners of Barkefellers said they will help pay for the medical bills once they have their own vets review the records and X-rays themselves, and get the proof they need to make sure this injury happened there. 1518

It’s hard to know what so many of us face by just passing by.“I had lived in a very dark place for a very long time," said Taylor Tripp. When someone, like Tripp, let’s you see their struggle, you can grasp the strength of mental health's grip."I was on my last rope," she said.Mental health is a battle that psychotherapist Shelli Myles says we can’t fight the same way anymore. To her, that hope is found at her business, The Mind Gym in Centennial, Colorado, where they specialize in neurofeedback.“When they come here, we’re trying to give them hope and help them see that there is another way to help themselves," Myles said. “We put electrodes on the head. We’re monitoring live brain waves."She says, in a recording of the brain’s waves, she can see certain brainwave activity associated with challenges like depression or anxiety.“If someone has too much or too little of something, that causes them to have symptoms," Myles said. She says with neurofeedback, they then “train” the brain to perform better.A patient sits in a chair with electrodes attached to their head as they watch a screen with headphones on. Their brain is rewarded when their brainwaves are in a certain range with a screen that brightens and audio that plays louder in their headphones.“The brain is training to do what we’re asking it to do," Myles said.Think of it as conditioning, just like any other part of the body.“Your brain is a muscle, just as if you were to have a sprained ankle or a broken leg. You can’t expect someone to run a race with it," Tripp said.Shelli sees the methods they use at The Mind Gym as a way to treat mental health beyond traditional paths such as medication, and a way to reach breakthroughs that can feel hard to find.“It’s kind of like an onion. It will unfold stuff," Myles said. "So the importance of having a counselor while you’re doing neurofeedback is important.”Though it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health says Neurofeedback is an alternative method that has shown improvement in treating many mental health disorders. But its report suggests the benefits aren’t long-lasting.“I’m able to sleep for the first time in my life," Tripp said.Tripp says her sessions twice a week for six months have undeniably worked for her.“Colors are brighter, food tastes different, it’s beyond words really," Tripp said. “To know I could have transformed my life so long ago, nobody should be struggling right now that this is out there.” 2506

It may take until September to contain the largest fire in California history, which is now nearly the size of Los Angeles. So far, two firefighters have been injured while fighting the Mendocino Complex Fire, which consists of two fires -- the Ranch Fire and the River Fire -- in Northern California. The pair have burned 292,692 acres and was 34 percent contained as of Tuesday evening. The colossal fire altogether has destroyed 75 residences, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.Cal Fire estimated that full containment could take until September 1. The Mendocino Complex Fire ignited on July 27.Last year's Thomas Fire, which is the second-largest fire in California history, took more than six months to extinguish after burning 281,893 acres in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. 852

INDIANAPOLIS — You can give someone the "MIDLFNGR" on I-465 in the middle of Indiana, but that doesn't mean you can have it written on your license plate. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has rejected at least 318 personalized license plate requests in 2020 that were determined to be too "D1RTY" for the road. The list of rejects, which WRTV acquired through an information request with the BMV, range from wildly profane to sexually explicit to politically motivated to complete gibberish. One person decided to be a "SMRTA55," while others wondered "WTF 2020" and cursed "COV1D19." A few submissions came from spirited Purdue fans who wanted to tell other drivers it's time to "BTFU" (Boiler The F**k Up).Many of the puns referred to, well, let's just say bodily functions and anatomy. And at least half simply were not suitable to be printed on a family-friendly news website, such as the one you're reading now, so you will have to use your imagination. We're "SRRY."According to the BMV, personalized license plates can only contain a combination of numbers and letters. Special characters are not allowed. (The person who submitted "F*NITUP" should have read the instructions.)The BMV can refuse a personal license plate if it contains a combination of letters or numbers that "carries a meaning or connotation offensive to good taste and decency," "would be misleading" or that "the BMV otherwise considers improper for issuance." (Better luck next time, "B4D 4SS.")People whose vanity plates are denied can register a standard plate and have the personalized license plate fee refunded. (Yes, someone actually paid an extra in a failed attempt to have "POOOPS" put on their car.)The moral of the story is, if the BMV rejects your plate idea, it's not that they're not saying "WEHATEU." They just think it's a little too "SL34ZY" and you should "TRYHRDR."This story originally reported by Daniel Bradley on wrtv.com. 1938
