SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who survived her mother jumping from the Coronado Bridge while holding her got to meet someone who was there that day.Bertha Loaiza was just 3-years-old when her mother leapt from the 246-tall bridge on August 5, 1985.Her mother never came to after hitting the water.“It was the first body I ever saw,” said Fred Maupin who was on his parents’ sailboat near the bridge that day, “at 10-years-old, that sticks with you.”Maupin remembers watching responders pull two bodies out of the water and tried to put the memory in the back of his mind, but says it grew with time.“That’s how it become more tragic and scarring,” said Maupin, “remembering that someone could do that with her baby.”RELATED:?Woman survived her mother's bridge suicide as a toddlerMaupin saw a story about Loaiza on Facebook a few weeks ago and knew he had to meet her in person.Fred hit the road early from Arizona on Friday and the two met for the first time at Gloriettta Bay Park “I feel like I have to apologize,” said Loaiza, “cause he’s gone through it in a different way than I have.”The two hugged then talked for more than an hour — Bertha even got him a gift.“I feel better that he can see that I’m okay,” said Loaiza, “he can remember that instead of the bad stuff.”“Taking a memory that was so haunting and turning the page,” said Maupin, “it’s a better ending to the story than I had in my mind.” 1436

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Health received its first batch of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, and the health care provider expects another shipment next week.“We expect next week to perhaps get 5,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine,” said Dr. Charles Daniels, Chief Pharmacy Officer at UC San Diego Health. Daniels added they could receive the shipment as soon as Monday or Tuesday, but no date has been finalized.The Moderna vaccine is still awaiting emergency use authorization from the FDA, which it could receive this week. Pfizer’s vaccine was the first to get such approval last week.UC San Diego received close to 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine Tuesday and plans to begin administering shots to its highest risk health care workers at its Hillcrest and La Jolla locations Wednesday morning.On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said California was expected to get 393,000 more doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week, on top of the 327,000 it received this week. Newsom said California is also slated to receive 672,000 doses of Moderna’s vaccine by the end of the month.San Diego County has not given an estimated timeline to receive the Moderna vaccine or how large a shipment it expects.UC San Diego Health was part of the Moderna trial, but Dr. Daniels says it is not the reason for their access to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two guided-missile destroyers were simultaneously dry docked at a Barrio Logan shipyard Wednesday. The USS Stethem and USS Decatur were lifted together inside the BAE Systems’ “Pride of California” dry dock. The dry-dock is 950 feet long, 160 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. The destroyers each are 505-feet-long and displace about 9,000 tons, according to BAE Systems. Crews will conduct repairs on the ships’ hulls, internal ballast and storage tanks, ventilation, propulsion and engineering systems, and living spaces. The ships should be re-floated by April 2020, BAE systems reports. 636

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Voters in San Diego County will have fewer places to vote in person for the 2020 Presidential Election, but officials say they've increased the opportunities people have to make sure their vote counts.On Wednesday, the county released the final list of 235 "Super Poll" locations, where people can vote in person. Every voter will be assigned to one of those polls.That's down from around 1,600 polling places during the primary."Certainly our world has been upended when it comes down to all things elections," says Michael Vu, the County Registrar of Voters.Vu told ABC 10News the county had to do fewer, larger polling sites to accommodate for social distancing required by coronavirus guidelines. But, he adds that voters will have four days to cast their ballot in person.Those Super Poll locations will be open on Oct. 31, Nov. 1, and Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. On Election Day, they'll be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.Even with the extra days and hours for in-person voting, Vu says the best option for voters is to use the mail-in ballot that every registered voter in San Diego will receive around Oct. 6."We, in our county, have had a tradition and culture of voting by mail," says Vu, noting that 76.5% of all registered voters already signed up to be a permanent mail ballot voter.Vu says he has complete confidence that the post office will deliver ballots to voters and return them to the Registrar on time.For people who don't want to put their ballot in the mail, the Registrar is also setting up 126 ballot-drop off sites across the county. Those will be available starting Oct. 6.With 1.86 million registered voters in San Diego County, Vu says this year's election was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
