LOS ANGELES (AP) — Video released Tuesday shows the dramatic moment firefighters rescued three people and two dogs as thick smoke and flames approached in Southern California. The Los Angeles Fire Department video shows one of its helicopter crew rescuing the group from a mountain peak as a humongous wildfire bore down, coming as close as a football field. The Nov. 9 video was taken as pilots David Nordquist and Joel Smith battled the Woolsey Fire that was raging through the Santa Monica Mountains toward Malibu. The crew was making a water drop when it was asked to rescue the group. The pilots headed that way despite dwindling fuel. With smoke darkening the sky, they hunted for a landing spot among antenna towers, service buildings, cars and vegetation. They finally found a tight and tricky spot on top of a ridge and Smith got out to help the people and their pets, including an English mastiff who was afraid of the helicopter and had to be coaxed by its owner to get on board.Once everyone is safe inside, the pilots take off, with Smith remarking: "Ugh, that was close.""That's enough excitement for me today," he said as they pulled away from the massive smoke plumes.Nordquist responds: "You and me both, brother."Los Angeles fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said none of the people or animals was hurt. The video of their rescue has gotten so much attention, members of the public have been calling the department to make sure everyone was OK and to commend the pilots, he said. The department's Facebook post of the video had more than 1,000 shares. One user wrote that she "kept having to wipe tears watching this!""Brave, brave, brave," she said. 1685

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As part of its stepped-up response to a surge in COVID-19 cases, California is tightening its requirements for face coverings, issuing revised rules that mandate everyone wear a mask at all times outside the home when within six feet of people from other households. The revised guidance issued Monday states that residents "must wear face coverings when they are outside the home," unless they are more than six feet away from other people.People who are outdoors but not close to anyone else do not have to wear a mask, but they must have one with them to put on in case they come within six feet of other people. The rules apply to anyone aged 2 or older, but exempt people with specific medical conditions and those who are hearing impaired or communicating with a hearing-impaired person.Other exemptions to the rule include:-- people in a car alone or with members of their own household-- people working alone in an office or room-- people who are "actively eating or drinking"-- workers who must wear respiratory protectionThe state has long called on residents to wear face coverings in public, particularly while in close contact with others. The new rules broaden previous guidance that provided recommendations on when people should wear masks. The state rule essentially mirrors the guidance in Los Angeles County, which says residents "should use a clean face covering anytime they will be in contact with other people who are not household members in public or private spaces." 1518

LONDON (AP) — Archaeologists said Monday that they have discovered a major prehistoric monument under the earth near Stonehenge that could shed new light on the origins of the mystical stone circle in southwestern England.Experts from a group of British universities say the site consists of at least 20 huge shafts, more than 10 meters, or 32 feet, in diameter and 5 meters deep, forming a circle more than 2 kilometers— over a mile — in diameter.Researchers say the shafts appear to have been dug around 4,500 years ago.Scientists believe the shafts could mark the boundary of a sacred area or precinct around a circular monument known as the Durrington Walls henge, about 3 kilometers, or 2 miles, from Stonehenge. The Guardian obtained a photo of the new discovery. 776

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A homeless man is facing a murder charge in what authorities say was a random attack on a California father, who was stabbed in the neck as his 5-year-old daughter sat on his lap in a crowded beachside steakhouse.Jamal Jackson, 49, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Anthony Mele. He was being held in Ventura County jail on a .5 million bail. It was unclear Saturday if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.Mele and his wife were eating dinner with their daughter Wednesday at Aloha Steakhouse in Ventura. The girl was sitting on her father's lap when prosecutors say Jackson walked up and stabbed Mele in the neck.Prosecutor Richard Simon said patrons and a restaurant employee followed Jackson out of the restaurant, even though he still had the knife. They kept track of him until police arrived and arrested him.Mele was taken to a hospital and died Thursday after being taken off life support."It's horrible," Simon said. "You don't think you're going to be killed when you go out to dinner at a nice restaurant with your family and you didn't do anything."Simon said the two men had not interacted before the attack."He was just sitting there with his daughter in his lap," Simon said. "You're not supposed to die that way."Mele's loved ones started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for a funeral and to support his wife and daughter.Mele's Facebook page was filled with photos of his daughter and said he was a manager at an AT&T store.Police confirmed Saturday that a bystander reported a man who turned out to be Jackson for disruptive behavior several hours before the stabbing.According to the bystander, a man was yelling on the promenade not far from the restaurant about three hours before the attack.Patrol officers were out on other calls so command center staff monitored the man — who turned out to be Jackson — via a pier security camera system for more than 20 minutes before determining he didn't seem to be a threat, police said.Police are asking anyone who spoke with Jackson during that time to contact investigators. The killing prompted the Ventura City Council to increase police patrols in the area and add staff members to monitor security cameras, among other measures."We are extremely disheartened and infuriated by this criminal attack," Mayor Neal Andrews said in a statement. "We will not tolerate this in our community. Nothing is more important than the safety of our visitors, residents and businesses."If convicted, Jackson faces up to 55 years in prison. He has prior convictions for burglary and unlawful sexual intercourse dating back to the 1990s, according to online court records. 2696
