SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Soon after the pandemic forced Chollas Creek Elementary to close its campus back in March, parents have been able to pick up meals for their children they usually received while attending classes.To help provide this service to families, the San Diego Food Bank helps distribute boxes of food to those who need it.Food Bank CEO James Floros says the organization is now serving 47 school sites in eight different districts.Before the pandemic, the Food Bank helped around 350,000 people; that number has now doubled.With distance learning continuing into the fall, non-profits, the districts, and the county are all trying to make sure kids don't go hungry while they learn at home."We knew when COVID hit that this was going to be a marathon, not a sprint and even if we had a vaccine tomorrow and COVID went away... now we're in a recession and we could be doing this for the next couple of years," Floros said.If parents can't make it to their child's school regularly to pick up meals, they can go to the Food Bank's super pantries.There are dozens of locations all over the county, each open at least three days a week to provide groceries.In addition to the Food Bank, Feeding San Diego is also partnering with local school districts to distribute food.Both websites have sections to look up where to get food in your neighborhood and what resources are available.At many locations, all you have to do is show up, no questions asked."There's enough food for everybody they just need to reach out to the San Diego Food Bank, we'll help their families," said Floros.TO HELP OR FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SERVICES go to:https://feedingsandiego.org/get-help/https://sandiegofoodbank.org/gethelp/ 1731

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several men tried to scale the border fence at Border Field State Park Thursday evening.Video shows the men sitting on top of the wall attempting to get over. Border Patrol responded and agents were able to break up the crowd on the Mexico side of the border. Following the incident, the agency said it is willing to add agents in the area as needed. According to Border Patrol officials, about 167 arrests are made per day at the San Diego sector of the border. VIDEO: Migrants climb over border fence at Border Field State ParkEarlier in the week, dozens of migrants were caught on video climbing over the same section of the border fence. During that incident, several people successfully made it over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border before being apprehended by agents. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled.After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven patients from Rady Children’s Hospital took a break from their treatment and got in the water with Bottlenose dolphins.SeaWorld trainer Jorge Villa hosted the children for the experience. Villa holds a special place in his heart for Rady Children’s because he was treated there when he was diagnosed with Diabetes at the age of 12.For many of the children, it’s therapeutic and offers them a chance to forget about whatever health challenges they face and focus on being a kid.“It just brings you into the playful childishness that you have in your heart and in your mind,” said Juliana Abraham, 14. She’s been fighting a rare form of brain cancer.  Her mom says faith, prayer, and a positive attitude have helped Juliana persevere.Rady has been offering the dolphin interaction program to patients since 2008. It was first inspired by SeaWorld dolphin trainer and cancer survivor Joy Clausen-Soto.For more information on the program, contact Rady Children’s Hospital at 858-576-1700. 1038
