SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Black Friday is the official kick off to the holiday shopping season and with more shoppers purchasing packages, more thieves are looking to make a grab.San Diego Sheriff's deputies issued tips on Black Friday for consumers hoping to keep their new gifts safe this season.First, they advise that shoppers avoid leaving anything a thief would want visible in cars. That includes:PurseWalletMailPresentsBagsPackagesElectronics (i.e. iPad, iPhone, tablet, laptop, music player)A thief could get an address from shoppers via their car — using a driver's license, insurance registration card, or mail — and in turn try and burglarize a home for those recently-bought presents."The biggest mistake is them being on their phones, and not slowing down, taking the time to lock your cars, roll up your windows. Please make sure that any packages that you buy, you remove from your back seat, put them in the trunk, lock them, secure them," Sergeant Pamela Murphy said. She also wants shoppers to be mindful when they leave the store, especially at night, "don't have too many things in your arms that you can't carry or defend yourself."RELATED: San Diegans brave the pouring rain to score Black Friday dealsIf someone becomes a victim of a crime, deputies don't recommend posting about it on social media. Instead, call local law enforcement. The department does not monitor social media for potential crimes.Reporting a crime helps law enforcement track trends, which makes a difference in communities. "If there's trends we need to go out and make sure there's extra patrol and make sure our deputies are checking the area more often as well as the senior volunteers," Murphy said.RELATED: Black Friday strategies that actually workDuring the holidays the department has more frequent patrols, and puts up Sky Towers in mall parking lots, giving deputies an edge while surveying parking lots. 1913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California officials said Friday that a technical glitch caused data on hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 tests to go unreported.Despite the inaccurate data, officials say they are still seeing a trend showing a decrease in case rates. Hospitalization and death data, however, is collected differently and unaffected by the glitch.According to the state, the data system they use failed and that led to inaccurate case numbers and case positivity rates. That failure prevented counties from having some of the data they need to monitor and respond to the virus in local communities, like contact tracing. The state says that about two weeks ago, a server outage created a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system. At the same time, they realized they weren't getting data from one of the largest commercial reporting labs for about five days.California Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly says the issues have been fixed."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250,000 to 300,000 cases will be resolved, giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly told reporters on Friday. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."The state says the system was not built for the volume of data it's receiving. It's putting new systems in place and has created a backup system to double-check the data and reports.California's County Monitoring Watch List was paused last week so that the glitch does not play a role in decision making about county statuses.Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered an investigation into what happened with the reporting system. 1764

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Breakfast and brunch aficionados will soon have a whole new reason to flip over the most important meal of the day. "Flap Your Jacks" is bringing its own take on the traditional breakfast dish to North Park later this summer. San Diego (KGTV) -- County leaders are taking steps to provide more access to coronavirus testing to some of the local communities hit hardest by the pandemic. The new outreach program will begin with a free new testing site at the Mexican Consulate at 1549 India St. starting at 8 a.m. Monday and will run until 3:30 p.m.No appointments are needed. The County of San Diego has been trying to expand testing and outreach in the Latino community, which has been the hardest hit by the coronavirus.Of the more than 42,000 confirmed cases in the county, Latinos account for 63% of that total.County and community leaders say the Consulate’s opening as a testing location will provide an accessible, safe way for San Diego’s Mexican and Latino communities to receive COVID-19 testing. The additional testing locations coming online in the coming weeks will function on a 14-day rotation. The dates and locations of all of these sites have yet to be announced. 960
