Just 12 days ago, residents on the US island territory of Puerto Rico were sideswiped by then Category 5 Hurricane Irma. Even with the eye of Irma missing Puerto Rico by 50 miles, the storm knocked out power and did damage. As Category 5 Hurricane Maria churns in the Caribbean late Tuesday, it is expected to strike the island head on. As of Tuesday evening, Maria had top winds of 175 MPH and a minimum pressure of 909 MBs. Although Hurricane Irma had top sustained winds of 185 MPH, Irma's pressure never dropped below 914 MBs. In preparation, President Donald Trump has ordered an emergency declaration, freeing up disaster resources. FEMA Director Brock Long said that the agency is sending extra supplies to the US Virgin Islands, and the Virginia Task Force 1 urban search and rescue team is remaining in Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told NPR that the territory has opened 500 shelter and is expecting "severe devastation.""Our main focus is to shift focus from the recovery process of Irma to make sure everyone is in a safe shelter," Rossello said. Adding to the potential disaster, Puerto Rico's mountainous terrain could cause landslides. In addition, winds typically increase with height.  1280

KENOSHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin high school teacher is on paid leave after students recorded her using a racial slur on camera during class. The teacher can be heard repeatedly using the “N-word” several times while students in the class laugh. The parent of the student who took the video told WTMJ the incident started when a student at Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin used the word with another student. That’s when the parent said the teacher used the slur and said that she should be able to use it because it is used within the African-American community. At Tuesday’s Kenosha Unified School District board meeting, representatives from the community’s Coalition for Dismantling Racism spoke about the incident.“Our concern is the total lack of action from the administration. This should have been addressed immediately. Especially when several students stated how uncomfortable they were in the classroom. A teacher should not make her students uncomfortable particularly when you’re talking about something as sensitive as using a racial slur,” Darrell Greene said. The parent of the student who shot the video says he turned it over to the school’s principal immediately after it was shot on November 29, but in a statement to  the district said: 1309

Jeffrey Tambor will not be returning for the next season of "Transparent," Amazon Studios tells CNN.Tambor, who was the series lead, had previously indicated he might not return to the critically acclaimed show, after harassment allegations were made against him.The actor has said the allegations against him were "simply and utterly untrue."In a statement released late Thursday, Tambor said he was "profoundly disappointed in Amazon's handling of these false accusations against me."He also accused Amazon of conducting an investigation that was "was deeply flawed and biased toward the toxic politicized atmosphere that afflicted our set."Tambor, 73, first faced allegations in November, spurring an investigation by Amazon. One of his accusers is his former assistant Van Barnes, who claimed Tambor "made lewd, sexually suggestive and unwelcome remarks to her on a number of occasions," according to Deadline, which first reported the allegations. In a statement posted to social media in November, "Transparent" actress Trace Lysette accused Tambor of making sexual advances and comments toward her.In a statement obtained by CNN on Thursday, "Transparent" creator Jill Soloway praised Lysette and Barnes, "whose courage in speaking out about their experience on 'Transparent' is an example of the leadership this moment in our culture requires.""We are grateful to the many trans people who have supported our vision for 'Transparent' since its inception and remain heartbroken about the pain and mistrust their experience has generated in our community," she said. "We are taking definitive action to ensure our workplace respects the safety and dignity of every individual, and are taking steps to heal as a family."Tambor has played Maura Pfefferman, a father who comes out as transgender to his wife and children, since 2014.The show was renewed for a fifth season in August, but Tambor's future on the show remained in question. In its first four seasons, "Transparent" earned praise for lifting the visibility of the transgender community. It has also raked in a number of awards for Amazon, including the Golden Globe for best TV comedy or musical in 2015 and a number of awards for Tambor. In a statement in November, Tambor said playing his character on "Transparent" "has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life." 2381

Joe Biden’s search for a running mate is entering a second round of vetting for a dwindling list of potential vice presidential nominees, with several black women in strong contention.Prominent Democrats with knowledge of the process said Biden’s vetting committee has narrowed the choices to as few as six serious contenders after initial interviews. Among those still in the mix are former presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. A potentially surprise inclusion is Susan Rice, who served as President Barack Obama’s national security adviser.Harris went after Biden last June during the first Democratic presidential debate for his stance on school busing early in his tenure as a US senator. Harris then dropped out of the race in late 2019, and remained neutral before endorsing Biden in March. Also seeking the Democratic nomination, Warren briefly attained frontrunner status in polling during the fall. Her polling numbers began to sour in October as she became a huge target on a 12-person debate stage in Ohio. Warren faced attacks from a number of other candidates for her lack of specifics for paying for a universal healthcare plan – a plan Biden opposes.Warren remained in the race through Super Tuesday, failing to win a single state during the primaries. She endorsed Biden in April after Sen. Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race.Rice has not run for major elected office, but gained her bona fides in both the Clinton and Obama administrations. She was appointed as the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during President Bill Clinton’s second term. She then became President Barack Obama’s ambassador to the United Nations in his first term in office, and his national security advisor during his second term.Rice’s response to the attack on the US embassy in Libya in 2012 garnered mass media scrutiny. Rice said she received CIA talking points that indicated the attack on the embassy was a spontaneous attack sparked by a hateful video. The United States’ response to the attack under Obama was the subject of a number of congressional hearings. 2109

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday, that would allow concealed carry in churches, daycares and bars, among other locations.House Bill 1936 extends the list of places where gun owners can carry a concealed weapon — whether they have a permit or not."The definition of a criminal is someone who doesn't follow the law. We should be giving an individual the ability to protect themselves in any situation," said state Rep. Jered Taylor, a Republican from Nixa. This is the second year Taylor has introduced this bill.Currently, in Missouri, there are 17 locations where concealed carry is not allowed. Taylor's bill would narrow that list.If passed, the bill would allow concealed carry at amusement parks, casinos, child care facilities, churches, hospitals, stadiums, polling locations and local government buildings, including public universities and colleges."You cannot carry into those locations unless you have express permission from the property owner. What I am trying to do is leave it up to the property owner and let them decide what they want to allow and not allow," said Taylor. To opt out, private businesses would have to post signs prohibiting guns. Government buildings and public universities would not have that option."When I think about gun violence in KC and the legislation that is happening in Jefferson City, there is a huge disconnect," said AdHoc president Damon Daniel.Based on his experiences helping victims of crime, Daniel said he does not believe guns are the solution. In fact, hours before a committee passed HB 1936, he joined the Jackson County prosecutor in announcing a new service to help innocent bystanders of crimes."That's just not the solution. The solution to curb violence in Kansas City, especially when we talk about homicides, is we need more economic opportunities, we need more jobs, more mental health providers," said Damon, who added other than having a gun to protect one's home "no one wants a lot of people walking around carrying guns."Since the bill passed out of a House rules committee, it can be brought for debate on the House floor anytime. To read the bill in its entirety, see the window below. 2195
