The Yale University police officers who were called to investigate a napping black graduate student ultimately admonished the white student who had contacted police in the first place, a Yale vice president says. The incident, captured in two Facebook Live videos, has sparked outrage about racial profiling and policing.Kimberly Goff-Crews, Yale's vice president for Student Life, said in an email to students Wednesday night that she's been "deeply troubled" by the incident.Officers interrogated Lolade Siyonbola, a black graduate student at Yale, early Tuesday after a white student found her sleeping in a common room of their dorm and called police.Siyonbola had been working on a paper in the Hall of Graduate Studies and fell asleep. Another student came in, turned on the lights and told her, "You're not supposed to be sleeping here. I'm going to call the police."Two police officers arrived and began questioning Siyonbola in a stairwell. When she asked them about the complaint, one officer said, "She called us (and) said there's somebody who appeared they weren't ... where they were supposed to be."The officers asked for her ID, and after some delay in verifying the spelling of her name, she was cleared to go.In the aftermath, Yale officials have defended the police response to the situation."We believe the Yale police who responded followed procedures," said Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart. "It is protocol in such circumstances for the police to ask for student (or staff) identification cards. Both students had to identify themselves."CNN has reached out to the other student for comment. The delay with verifying Siyonbola's ID was because the name on her card was her preferred name, which did not exactly match her name in university records, Peart said."As we do with every incident, we will be reviewing the call and the r

The US stock market sank deeper into the red following sluggish economic reports on Monday and bad news from a couple of blue-chip giants. The Dow fell 600 points by late afternoon, or 2.6%. The S&P 500 lost 2.6% and retreated to its lowest level of the year. And the Nasdaq joined the Dow & S&P 500 in negative territory for 2018. All three indexes have plunged about 7% so far this December. The Dow closed down 507 points for the day.And the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks tumbled into a bear market, marking a 20% decline from the record highs notched in late August.A weaker reading from the New York Federal Reserve about manufacturing in the Empire State and a drop in confidence from the nation's homebuilders weighed on the markets."Investors are zeroing in on this idea of slower growth for 2019," said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Global Advisors. "More people are worried about a recession in late 2019 or 2020."The political noise in Washington isn't helping either. President Trump, in a tweet Monday morning, repeated his criticism of the Federal Reserve for its recent rate hikes. The Fed meets Wednesday and is widely expected to raise rates again. But Trump tweeted that "it is incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris is burning and China way down, the Fed is even considering yet another interest rate hike. Take the Victory!"The Fed is supposed to be politically independent. Any evidence that it might be swayed by attacks from Trump could unnerve the markets."If the Fed doesn't raise rates it will look like it's succumbing to the bullying of Trump's tweets," Arone said. But Nancy Perez, managing director at Boston Private, said the Fed is likely to slow down its pace of rate hikes in 2019 simply because the economy is slowing, not because of pressure from Trump.Perez added that the recent market turmoil is justified because investors are readjusting to this fact."We have been getting a bump in profit margins due to lower taxes but the earnings growth itself is not sustainable," Perez said. "Projections will come down and volatility will continue." 2247

The Sanderson Sisters are hoping to put a spell on you, 27 years later.Actress Bette Midler was recently on Fox 5 New York's morning show "Good Day New York" where she confirmed that the original cast of "Hocus Pocus" was reuniting for a sequel.“They want to make a movie, they’ve asked us if we were interested and of course all of us said yes,” Midler said in the interview. “I’m game, I’m totally game.”The movie won’t be the first time the Sanderson Sisters would be reuniting. Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are coming together, as their “Hocus Pocus” characters, for a special live, one-night-only virtual event, “In Search Of The Sanderson Sisters,” which is set for Friday. 705

The student shot at a North Carolina high school Monday morning has died, police say.The shooting occurred in a Butler High School hallway and stemmed from a fight between the victim and the suspect, said Stason Tyrrell, Patrol Commander for the Matthews Police Department. The suspected shooter, also a student, is in custody, Tyrrell said.No one else was injured.Parents were able to pick up their children, but classes resumed in the afternoon for students wishing to stay, said Yaviri Escalera, spokeswoman for Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools.Matthews is located about 22 miles southeast of Charlotte.The-CNN-Wire 622

The stock market had its worst day in a month as virus cases surge and help for the economy from Washington remains nowhere in sight. The S&P 500 fell 1.9% Monday, deepening its losses from last week. Stocks of companies that need the virus to abate and the economy to return to normal had some of the biggest losses. Cruise lines and airlines fell sharply. Energy stocks also dropped in tandem with crude oil prices. In another sign of caution, Treasury yields pulled back after touching their highest level since June last week. Overseas markets also fell. The drop in stock value came as coronavirus cases reached peak levels in the US over the weekend, while White House chief of staff Mark Meadows proclaimed that the US would be unable to contain the spread of the virus. 788
