NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots. They also say they plan a full safety review of the course this year, and that's one issue that will be addressed.Representatives from the National City Parks and Recreation Department have not returned our calls for comment. 1308

More than 150 medical experts, scientists, teachers, nurses and others have signed on to an open letter calling on U.S. leaders to “shut it down, start over, do it right,” asking for the country to be locked down again to control the spread of the coronavirus.The letter appears on the U.S. Public Interest Research Groups website and is addressed to “decision makers” and recognizes how the country shutdown in March to stop the spread. There were early signs of decreasing infection rates.“You didn’t use the time to set us up to defeat the virus. And then you started to reopen anyway, and too quickly. Right now we are on a path to lose more than 200,000 American lives by November 1. Much like fired FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe wrote memos documenting his conversations with President Donald Trump, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN.A person familiar with the matter told CNN McCabe's memos are now in the hands of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.The memos also detail what Comey told McCabe about his own interactions with Trump while he was FBI director and are seen as a way to corroborate Comey's account in Mueller's probe.Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday, about a day before his 50th birthday and the date he was set to retire and begin receiving his anticipated pension, over accusations that McCabe directed FBI officials to speak to the media about an investigation tied to the Clinton Foundation and misled investigators about his actions. Following his firing Friday, McCabe told CNN in an interview that he had four interactions with the President last May, while he was acting FBI director.McCabe revealed that he had three in-person interactions and one phone call with Trump, in which the President berated him each time about his wife's failed Virginia Senate campaign.It is unclear exactly what is in McCabe's memos and if he memorialized every interaction he had with the President."In May, when Director Comey was fired and I had my own interactions with the President, he brought up my wife every time I ever spoke to him," McCabe told CNN. MOYOCK, N.C. – Three-year-old Vernon Smith is passionate about fire trucks and got a major surprise from dozens of first responders this weekend. Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department in North Carolina hosted a drive-by parade for the little boy who is about to have his third open heart surgery.Vernon’s dad, Blake Smith, wanted to put a smile on his son’s face, so he asked if the local fire truck could drive by. Word got around about Vernon’s story, and dozens of firefighters, police and others wanted to be part of the surprise.Other surrounding departments learned about the event and joined in: Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Currituck County Fire-EMS, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Pasquotank EMS, Lantz’s Towing, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.One of the assistant chiefs for the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Keith Storf, said the support they got from the neighboring departments was just phenomenal.Vernon’s mom, Brittany Blackwelder, said when she was 21 weeks pregnant, they learned that Vernon had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a rare disease that causes the left side of his heart to not work properly, which causes the right side to work double-time.Blackwelder said this will be his third reconstructive surgery, and said hopefully it will stabilize him. She said he can never play competitive sports and gets tired easily, but she said otherwise he should be able to live a normal life.Storf said the little boy has gone through more than most adults.
