(KGTV) - Paralympic Triathlete Amy Dixon trains, and lives by a simple motto: No Sight, No Limits.Now, new technology is taken even more of her limits away.Dixon is 98% blind, the result of a rare autoimmune disorder she got in her early 20s.Over the summer, she started using the IrisVision headset, which has helped give her a full field of vision."I can only see my knuckles and part of my fingers. The fingertips and palm are completely missing," Dixon explains when describing her sight. "With the headset, I saw my whole hand for the first time in 22 years!"The IrisVision Headset uses cameras mounted to a virtual reality-style headset. Technology within the headset helps focus the camera's view onto the part of the retina that can still process light. That creates a fuller picture for the wearer."It takes what's in front of you and remaps it on the digital screen inside the headset in a way that you can see," says IrisVision CEO Ammad Khan."I cannot wait to see how this technology will help hundreds of thousands of people around the world," he says.Dixon says it's helping her with the mundane, everyday aspects of training for the Paralympics."Writing sponsors, working on a computer, emails, doing expense reports and progress reports for USA Triathlon; it enables me to do all of that," she says. "That's equally as important as my training."Khan says this will help people with limited sight be able to do things like watch tv, play cards, go to movies, cook, navigate around their house, and all of the other mundane daily activities that people will full sight take for granted.He also says that this could help people stay in jobs longer, even as their eyesight gets worse.The headset is also equipped with Amazon Alexa and several other apps to make life easier.It was developed with the help of Johns Hopkins University and has FDA Approval. Khan says the headset is covered for Veterans under the VA system, and his company is working on getting more insurance carriers to cover it.Dixon is working towards the same goal through her non-profit foundation.Meanwhile, she's also working towards Tokyo in 2020. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – Escondido Police have released bodycam footage of an officer-involved shooting that left one man hospitalized last month.EPD says the incident started with a 911 call about a restraining order violation at about 3:30 a.m. on Broadway near Washington Avenue on June 19. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada, was at her home and she identified his vehicle.Officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue, but an officer spotted Quezada's reported vehicle near Broadway, where he pulled him over.The full incident video can be viewed here.Police say Quezada exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot-long crowbar and ran toward the officer, identified as "Officer Hamilton." The officer said Quezada was yelling something similar to "just kill me, I want to die" as he charged him.Police say the officer continued to tell Quezada to stop before he fired one round from his service weapon when he came within a few feet of him. Quezada reportedly paused and continued toward the officer, police say.The officer attempted to fire a second round, but his gun malfunctioned, according to police. After he cleared the round and continued commands to stop, the officer fire three more rounds and Quezada fell to the ground.RELATED: Escondido police: Man holding crowbar shot by officer during traffic stopPolice say the officer had backed away a total of 83 feet before firing the three rounds from his weapon. The officer didn't activate his body-worn camera until after he fired the rounds, police said, after saying the officer's camera was active during the shooting.A nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who was filling out paperwork in his vehicle witnessed the event unfold and assisted in the arrest, according to police.Quezada was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.EPD Chief Ed Varso said an investigation into the shooting is currently underway by the department's crimes of violence unit and an independent review of the case will be conducted by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office, and FBI.An internal review will also be completed, Varso said. 2280

(KGTV)- School leaders in a north county school district are trying to figure out how to address a legal petition filed by their teachers' union.The San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees held an emergency closed-door meeting Tuesday at Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach.A few dozen students and some parents gathered outside the school to protest the district's plan to return to in-person instruction in January."Our teachers have taught us to stand up for what's right, and we see that the board is not listening to their needs, their concerns, they're putting their lives at risk, so we are here to support our teachers," said student Andrea Gately.Parent Julie Bronstein said distance learning is not ideal, but she doesn't think it's safe for kids to return when the virus is surging."Why can't we just wait a bit more, get ourselves out of the danger zone, get beyond the surge, make sure teachers are able to be vaccinated to the extent possible, and then reopen in a grander fashion," said Bronstein.Late last Tuesday night, the San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees voted to give students the option to return to school one day a week on January 4th, then five days a week for in-person instruction on January 27th.Parents like Jane Woltman say students should have returned to class months ago."When they asked if kids wanted to go back full time in October, 80% of those parents said yes, yet we didn't go back then. We weren't in the purple tier then," said Woltman.Woltman has two kids at La Costa Canyon High School."I just think the social well being of kids is diminishing. Kids are losing engagement, and basically, this is a teaching model that was not intended to be long term," said Woltman.Friday, the California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the local teachers' union to block the January return.Duncan Brown is a counselor at Diegueno Middle School and Oak Crest Middle School. He's also the president of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. He says the district's plan violates the governor's regional stay at home order."It goes against CDC guidelines, it goes against CDPH rules, most districts have reconsidered reopening plans, but San Dieguito continues to move forward," said Brown.Under the state's health mandate, schools that were already open for in-person instruction were allowed to stay open when the county fell back into the purple tier. The union is challenging the district's definition of what is considered an open school."All the instruction is done through small cohorts, and we believe the intent of the reopening plan was if grades were going through a reopening. For example, 9th and 10th grade were invited back, then under those kinds of understandings, 11th and 12th graders would be able to continue the reopening as well," said Brown.Parents who believe kids should be back in school say the union is just delaying things."I just think it's a stall tactic, and the union doesn't want to go back period. I don't think that's the voice of a lot of teachers who are afraid of ramifications if they speak up," said Woltman.The board president says the district's reopening plan follows the guidance issued by The California Department of Public Health and includes detailed protocols for distancing and ventilation.Teachers in high-risk groups for the virus or with childcare issues can continue teaching remotely until January 27th, but the district hasn't decided beyond that. 3529

FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Monday morning neighbors posted about a rash of graffiti in Escondido, a block away from Glen View Elementary school, outraged at the content and vandalism.On East Mission Avenue, just past Midway Drive, a home and two power boxes stained with black spray paint. One of the designs looked like a Star of David, causing concern online, worried the vandalism was anti-semitic."I noticed the graffiti over there, and that's just a disgrace," Grandmother Rose Ochoa said as she paused on her daily walk with two grandchildren on their way to pick up another grandchild."I feel disrespected. I feel like there's a lot of hate," Christina Landers said. She's lived in this neighborhood for about 27 years and said the graffiti has spread closer to her home, "it's crazy, it's like they're messing up our side of town.""I mean it's everywhere, you can't walk down a block without seeing it," Ochoa said. She moved to San Diego from Los Angeles and said she loves this neighborhood."I think they're too young to point it out right now," she said referencing her 4-year-old granddaughter and 2-year-old grandson, "and I'm thankful for that, but there's going to come a time that I'll have to explain it to them, and that's going to be hard because I teach them at home do not to write on the walls, do not write on the chairs and then we walk out here and see everything on the walls."One of the tags included what looked like the Star of David, concerning the owner of the home that was tagged."I talked to the guy, and the guy says I don't have any enemies I don't know why they'd do this to me?"
