At least 29 people were killed during a week of severe weather conditions and devastating flooding in Italy, the country's interior minister said Sunday.Twelve people were confirmed dead on the island of Sicily on Sunday, including nine members of two families, the fire brigade announced on Twitter. The families were dining together when their house was submerged by water from a nearby river that suddenly overflowed. The fire brigade said its divers had found the bodies. Among the victims were two children, 1 and 3 years old.Italy's civil protection agency said it was still looking for a doctor who had been on his way to work at a hospital Saturday night and was missing.High winds and heavy rain have devastated parts of the country over the past week, causing the worst flooding in at least a decade in Venice, damages of more than 1 billion euros (.14 billion) in Veneto and landslides that have cut off villages, authorities said. The situation in Sicily is "dramatic," Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Sunday.Conte will call a cabinet meeting to announce a state of emergency in affected regions, he said at a press conference in Palermo, Sicily. 1168

Attendance at San Diego Padres home games is on pace to finish more than 11 percent higher than the turnout for 2018. Through 65 home games, the team has drawn an average 30,200 fans per game. In 2018, the Padres drew an average 26,967 fans to games at Petco Park. The team made a splash in the offseason by signing superstar third baseman Manny Machado to a 0 million contract. Plus, excitement surrounding rookie Fernando Tatis Jr., now injured, has helped to draw fans. The Padres, still below .500, have also won 10 more games at this point in the season than they had at the same time last year. Olivia Millay, a server at Social Tap, which is next to Petco Park, says the increased attendance has helped business. "People are getting a lot more excited," she said. "I feel like last year there was almost more people cheering for the other team that would come here. Now you're seeing a lot more Padres jerseys. You've got Machado, Tatis, ya know?"But the uptick in attendance hasn't helped all business equally. There are still multiple shuttered storefronts near Petco Park, including the site of what used to be Tilted Kilt on 10th Avenue. Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe de L'Opera, across from Petco Park, said high rents hurt. Plus, she pointed to issues with the area's homeless population that can keep customers away. "In the morning everyday we have to remove transients that are sleeping, along with many other issues," she said. Ahmed said the increased attendance has helped a bit, but can only do so much. 1531

As teachers report to work this week at Georgia’s largest school district, the Gwinnett County Public Schools, 260 of them tested positive or reported exposure to the coronavirus, according to multiple reports.Officials told CNN that most of the cases were likely through community spread. "As of last Thursday, we had approximately 260 employees who had been excluded from work due to a positive case or contact with a case," GCPS spokeswoman Sloan Roach told CNN. "This number is fluid as we continue to have new reports and others who are returning to work," she added. The district plans to reopen August 12 after shutting down in March. Nearly 160,000 students attend classes in Gwinnett County. The area saw a rise in coronavirus cases in July, according to public health data. The state of Georgia has averaged over 3,000 new coronavirus cases per day in the month of July."Given the number of COVID cases in Gwinnett we would expect to see positives among our employees based on the community spread in our county," Roach told CNN. 1045

Asked whether President Donald Trump had ever used the N-word, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders would not definitively say, instead referring reporters to a tweet."The President addressed that question directly," she said, adding, "I've never heard him use that term or anything similar."The question comes as former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman has claimed there's a tape of Trump using the racial epithet on the set of his NBC reality show "The Apprentice" -- though there is no evidence such a tape exists.Trump tweeted Monday night: "I don't have that word in my vocabulary, and never have."Pressed specifically on whether any recording of the President using the racial epithet exists, Sanders said: "I can't guarantee anything, but I can tell you that the President addressed this question directly."She maintained that Trump is someone who is "fighting for all Americans," and that his policies are helpful "particularly for African-Americans," citing African-American unemployment statistics.Sanders also claimed Tuesday that Trump's description of his former aide as a "dog" had "nothing to do with race and everything to do with the President calling out someone's lack of integrity."The "dog" comment was one of many insults the President has used to describe prominent African-Americans, but Sanders insisted Trump insults people of other races as well."The President's an equal opportunity person that calls things like he sees it," she said. "He fights fire with fire." 1501

ATLANTA — Georgia’s top elections official says his office is investigating potential election law violations by groups working to register voters ahead of January's Senate runoffs. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger named four groups his office is specifically investigating: America Votes, Vote Forward, The New Georgia Project and Operation New Voter Registration Georgia. He says some groups are allegedly encouraging people outside the state to register to vote in January's Senate run-off election, according to The Hill. “We have opened an investigation into a group called America Votes, who is sending absentee ballot applications to people at addresses where they have not lived since 1994,” Raffensperger said Monday in announcing the investigations. America Votes responded to the accusations in a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, saying they have mailed applications to those on the list of voters maintained by Raffensperger's office. The secretary is also punching back at claims that fraud has tainted the state’s presidential election. Raffensperger said dishonest actors are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims and apparently misleading the president as well. He said during a news conference Monday that his office has 23 investigators probing 250 open cases alleging some kind of election law violation, but none of them cast doubt on the integrity of the state's election results. 1461
