For frontline healthcare workers battling COVID-19, the hospital can feel like a war room. Patients are in need of quick help. Some face life-threatening symptoms that need immediate care. Some cannot be saved. They are split-second decisions that have to be made as more patients funnel into hospital beds, and the effects can weight heavily on those tasking with making them.“The mental health symptoms tend to peak about 12 months after the actual event,” said Dr. Chris Thurstone, director of behavioral health at Denver’s largest hospital, Denver Health. In January, a few months before the pandemic hit, Denver Health implemented a program developed at Johns Hopkins called Resilience in Stressful Events (RISE) to help its employees deal with burnout symptoms, unknown to the influx that was to come.In the first few weeks of the program, the hospital’s drop-in center saw around 30 hospital employees a day. Now, months into the pandemic the same drop-in center is seeing more than 300 hospital employees a day.“[Frontline healthcare workers] describe it as this different of burnout than they’ve felt before,” said Dr. Thurstone.“We’re certainly seeing increased rates of people who are struggling and having a difficult time,” added clinical psychologist Dr. Thom Dunn.It is an unprecedented challenge among doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff that is not only being felt in the United States but globally.Researches in Wuhan found 30 to 50 percent of healthcare providers were in a burnout stage before COVID-19. Now, that number is up to 75 percent of healthcare providers.“Depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance use: those are the four things we watch out for,” said Dr. Thurstone. “As things start to settle down and people actually get a chance to breathe and think and be themselves again, they might notice that they’re not completely themselves.”The RISE program offers counseling and an area for frontline workers to take a load off, through board games and other activities that could help ameliorate the stressors they are experiencing elsewhere in the hospital. At Denver Health, calls into RISE have increased tenfold as well, proving that once COVID-19 becomes manageable, another epidemic may soon start to emerge.“We can’t just get through COVID and then pretend nothing happened,” said Dr. Thurstone. “This is placing a stress and strain on every human being, and healthcare workers are human beings and no exception.” 2458

Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb said Monday that he does not believe the ongoing special counsel probe led by Robert Mueller is a "witch hunt."The comment puts him at odds with his former boss, President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called the probe into possible ties between his campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election a "witch hunt."Cobb, speaking with CNN's Gloria Borger at the day-long CITIZEN Conference in New York, took a markedly different position."I don't think it's a witch hunt," he said. The comment came during a panel with Jack Quinn, a former White House lawyer under President Bill Clinton.Later, Cobb lauded Mueller, the former head of the FBI and a Vietnam War veteran."Bob Mueller is an American hero in my view," Cobb said, noting his service as a Marine."He was a very serious prosecutor," Cobb said. "He and I first met in the mid '80s when we were prosecuting different places and I have respected him throughout."Cobb left the White House earlier this year after months of working on the administration's response to the Mueller investigation."I've done what I came to do in terms of managing the White House response to the special counsel requests," Cobb said. "I'm extremely grateful to the President and Chief Kelly for the opportunity to serve my country."It was clear on Monday, however, the Cobb's time in the White House was unique, highlighted by the fact that he often had to work with the President on how to publicly respond to Mueller.Borger asked both lawyers about working with Presidents in crisis and Quinn lauded his former boss."I have practiced law for a really long time on Washington, Bill Clinton was the best client I ever had" he said. "Believe it or not, he not only listened to advice, he sought it out and particularly, frankly, when he was in crisis, he wanted input, he wanted other people's thinking, he wanted guidance."When Borger asked if there was anger, frustration of blow ups, Quinn said no, the vision of Clinton a quick tempered was a "myth."Cobb, to laughs, responded: "Um, I had a slightly different experience." 2109

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors charging New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft with buying sex from massage parlor prostitutes are trying to save their case. They will argue before a Florida appellate court on Tuesday that police legally made secret video recordings of Kraft having paid sex at a massage parlor in January 2019. A lower court judge ruled that prosecutors could not use the recordings. He said the warrant allowing police to install secret cameras inside the Orchids of Asia spa violated constitutional standards. Kraft is charged with misdemeanor solicitation of prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty but issued a public apology. 667

For the first time in roughly four months, weekly jobless claims in the U.S. have risen. The Department of Labor’s latest reports shows 1.4 million people filed new jobless claims, compared to 1.3 million people the week prior.“People are overwhelmed by the news. They are overwhelmed when they see that a million extra people just filed for unemployment,” said Sarah Johnston, a job search strategist.Johnston runs the company Briefcase Coach and specializes in helping people find work in this job market.“The good news is my clients and I know from looking at LinkedIn’s update, people are getting jobs,” said Johnston.Finding a job right now, with such high unemployment, is not easy. It is competitive but--as Johnston teaches in a course with LinkedIn-- if you search in the “hidden job market,” you’ll find better success.“The hidden job market is all the jobs that are unadvertised online,” said Johnston. These jobs may be unadvertised because an employer may be planning a promotion or expanding but hasn’t announced that yet. If you can get to know the hiring manager before new jobs post, you have a better chance of topping their list of candidates.“Tip number one is to understand what your options are. You really need to know your target companies, who hires people like you for work that you want to do,” said Johnston. She recommends creating a “target list” of the companies you want to work for and find out who are the hiring managers. Then, move on to tip number two, which is seeing who in your existing network may know or have connections to those managers or someone in that list of companies.“The final tip would be to not be afraid of being proactive in your job search and making contact or reaching out or getting an introduction to a hiring manager at your dream company or companies on your target list,” said Johnston. “It only takes one conversation to change the entire trajectory of your job search.”Johnston’s in-depth course on navigating the hidden job market is available on LinkedIn. It is one of many courses being offered by job search companies to help millions of Americans find work again. 2140

Five sponsors announced they have dropped advertisements from "The Sean Hannity Show" after his defense of embattled U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore. Coffeemaker Keurig, Realtor.com, genetic testing company 23 and Me, plus-size fashion firm Eloquii and vitamin company Nature's Bounty all pulled ads after a push by liberal group Media Matters for America to drop advertisements from the show, according to NBC News. The companies that opted to pull advertisements quickly faced push back from people defending Hannity and calling for a boycott of products produced by the companies. 606
