SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the nation continues to process what happened during the first presidential debate, many are expressing frustration about what didn’t happen.Local and national Latino American leaders are calling out the moderator and the candidates for making no mention of the millions of Latinos in the country.Just moments after the debate ended Tuesday night, organizations like the National Association of Hispanic Journalists shared a series of tweets highlighting that Latinos were not mentioned during the debate.According to the Pew Research Center, more than 32 million Latino voters are eligible to vote in November.Voters like Denisse Roldan Newell wanted to hear more from both candidates about their policies on a range of issues.“It's not just immigration, it's not just the border wall, it's having to do with economics, with smalls business development, with affordable health care, with education,” said Roldan Newell.Roberto Alcantar with the Chicano Federation told ABC 10News it was concerning that the candidates made no mention about COVID-19 and it’s disproportionate affect on the Latino community. In San Diego, Latinos make up 34% of the population but 65% of COVID-19 cases."These are not just Latino issues, these are issues for all of us as American. While, yes, we are Latinos, we are American and our issues are America’s issues," said Alcantar. Locally, Latino leaders like Roldan Newell and Alcantar hope the debate organizers and moderators to make a change before the next debate. The next debate is between the vice presidential candidates on Wednesday, October 7th. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At age 41, Ryan Bartell had already achieved so much: He was a two-time all-state runner, served in the Coast Guard, and was helping autistic children alongside his wife. He also had a son of his own. “Ryan called me on March 1 of last year to say that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer," remembers Jim Bartell, Ryan's father. The cancer was aggressive and chemotherapy wasn't working, Ryan was in a lot of pain. “They had him on morphine and fentanyl, two very serious opioids, and because of those two drugs he was asleep most of the time to deal with the pain," said Jim. Jim says that lasted for about four weeks until Ryan asked for cannabis. “He went from being asleep most of the time with fentanyl and morphine to being alert and being able to communicate, text, talk to friends, have visitors, while he was on the cannabis medicines."Jim says the cannabis gave Ryan a decent quality of life in his final weeks; he passed away seven weeks after the initial diagnosis. “While medical cannabis has been proven to help with reducing nausea, vomiting, and pain, hospitals in our state are expressly prohibited from providing it to patients," said State Senator Ben Hueso.Because of the Federal Drug-Free Workforce Act, hospitals have adopted policies prohibiting cannabis in their facilities. Hueso wants to change that with SB 305 or Ryan’s Law: Compassionate Access to Medical Cannabis in Healthcare Facilities Act.Healthcare facilities which treat terminally ill patients would be required to allow the use of medical cannabis, meaning patients could bring their product inside the hospital. The patient would be required to provide the facility with a copy of their medical marijuana card or recommendation by a physician. The bill excludes vaping or smoking but edibles, oils, topicals, etc. would be allowed. New York already has a similar law. “I felt something had to be done so that that didn’t happen to other people who wanted a higher quality of life near the end of their life," said Jim, who initiated the legislation. 2082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least six companies are working on COVID-19 vaccine candidates in San Diego, all within a 1.5-mile radius of where the I-5 and I-805 split.Locally, the farthest along appears to be Inovio Pharmaceuticals, which plans to launch a Phase 2 trial next month, potentially with a simultaneous Phase 3 trial. A Phase 3 trial is the final step in vaccine testing, with thousands of participants. The company is developing the vaccine using a DNA technique that isn’t used in any other vaccines on the market, although some are in the final stages of testing, said Dr. Kate Broderick, who leads Inovio’s vaccine program. To ensure the DNA enters a person’s cells, the company uses a proprietary device about the size of a toothbrush to deliver doses into the skin rather than a needle and syringe. The company announced Tuesday it secured a million grant from the Department of Defense to speed up production of the devices.Just down the street, TriLink Biotechnologies is working with researchers in London on a vaccine candidate that replicates itself in the body. It just started a Phase 1 trial this month.Nearby, Sorrento Therapeutics is working on both a COVID-19 vaccine and a treatment, but it hasn’t advanced yet to human trials. 10News previously featured the company’s efforts, which are based on techniques developed to fight cancer. On the other side of the 805, Arcturus Therapeutics is working with Duke University on a vaccine based on RNA, which acts as a messenger for DNA. There are no vaccines approved for humans that use this RNA approach. Trials are expected to begin in August, according to a tracker by the Milken Institute.UC San Diego is developing a vaccine using plant virus nanotechnology, leveraging an approach that’s used in vaccines against Hepatitis B and shingles. The university is also taking part in research on a COVID treatment.A spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Vir Biotechnology says the company is using its San Diego satellite office to help crunch data for the work on its vaccine, which is a collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).GSK, Janssen, and Pfizer each have vaccine candidates of their own and offices near the 5-805 split, but 10News was not able to immediately confirm if any of those companies were conducting COVID research locally. 2318
