MENLO PARK, Calif. – Facebook is offering to pay some of its users to deactivate their accounts in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election.It’s part of a new research partnership Facebook is launching to better understand the impact its website and Instagram have on key political attitudes and behaviors during U.S. elections.“We need to better understand whether social media makes us more polarized as a society, or if it largely reflects the divisions that already exist; if it helps people to become better informed about politics, or less; or if it affects people’s attitudes towards government and democracy, including whether and how they vote,” said Facebook when it announced the study Thursday.Facebook expects between 200,000 and 400,000 adults will choose to participate in the study. In a press release, the company said participating “could include taking part in surveys or agreeing to see a different product experience.”The company also said, “other participants may be asked to stop using Facebook or Instagram for a period of time. MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan model for American Girl Dolls is opening up about her health. Alyea Rourke, who has modeled as the Hawaiian American Girl doll Nanea Mitchell, says she's been diagnosed with a disease so rare it took nearly two years to diagnose."It seemed like a giant dream to me. I was just so scared I immediately thought I will never be able to skate again," the now 14-year-old said.Alyea was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multi-focal osteomyelitis (CRMO), a potentially serious and unique form of bone disease that can be long-lasting. Right now, there's no known cure, doctors say. "They described to us was possibly an ear issue, or it was an infection in the jaw or it could’ve been a tooth decay or something like that. So we went probably through about seven doctors before we got an answer," said Lynda Rourke, Alyea's mother. Despite the pain affecting her ability to skate and chance to live a regular teen life, the 14-year-old has tried to stay positive. "I'm not letting it stop me from skating and doing what I love," she said.Alyea's family has set up a GoFundMe?account for support with medical expenses.  1216

MEXICO CITY (AP) — About 100 Mexican soldiers and immigration agents raided a freight train in southern Mexico on Thursday and detained dozens of Central American migrants riding atop the cars.Such raids had been rare since the last crackdown on migrants in 2014. But under increasing U.S. pressure to reduce the flow of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans through Mexican territory, Mexico's government has stepped up enforcement.At least some of the troops wore armbands of Mexico's newly formed National Guard. The government says it has deployed thousands of Guard agents across the country with supporting immigration enforcement.In a scene filmed by Associated Press journalists, the train rolled to a stop in a rural area, and then soldiers climbed ladders to the top of freight cars shouting, "This is the army, you're surrounded!"Throngs of migrants sought to flee by running along the tops of freight cars, while others clambered down to the ground and headed into the brush.One soldier was seen wrestling a young, flailing man into a waiting immigration van by the neck. Agents filled three such vehicles with migrants, but hundreds more were apparently able to escape.The train may have been carrying as many as 400 migrants, and Mexico's Immigration Institute said it detained 40.The most recent such raid occurred May 1 in the state of Oaxaca. Central Americans have been riding freight trains, collectively known as "La Bestia," or The Beast, for years.Previous raids have served to temporarily discourage migrants from hopping aboard the trains, which is technically prohibited but has long been tolerated.Also Thursday, a joint statement from several federal agencies said 134 migrants were rescued from a crowded tractor-trailer abandoned along a highway in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.Soldiers and federal police discovered the trailer as people were trying to break the locks from inside to get out, it said. Some were found to be in a state of dehydration and had minor injuries.The Immigration Institute determined that 71 of the migrants were minors. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky’s attorney general has received a long-awaited ballistics report in the police shooting of Breonna Taylor. Attorney General Daniel Cameron tweeted Sunday that there is additional analysis needed now that the report is in his hands. He says there will be no announcement on the investigation this week. Cameron has indicated the ballistics report has slowed the investigation of Taylor’s death by police on March 13. Taylor was shot in her home by police as they served a no-knock narcotics warrant on her home.
