SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit have launched a digital marketing campaign that aims to fill more than 200 positions that are currently vacant in the department, the mayor announced Thursday.Downtown-based Loma Media will run the marketing campaign, which includes videos that will be shared on social media as well as a new recruitment website, with the goal of fully staffing the department by 2020, Faulconer said."Getting the San Diego Police Department back to full staffing of over 2,000 officers is a top priority," Nisleit said in a statement. In December 2017, the City Council approved an agreement to boost salaries for San Diego police officers through the 2020 fiscal year.Since the raises were announced, the number of officers lost to other law enforcement agencies is down 84 percent from last year, Faulconer said."The best way to keep San Diego one of the safest big cities in the country is by attracting the best and brightest recruits to the San Diego Police Department," Faulconer said in a statement. "We're going to be innovative and creative in how we do that."Loma was one of four companies that responded to a request for proposals issued by SDPD earlier in the year. A panel selected the firm because of its social media expertise and prior clients, which included the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command, Semper Fi Fund, UC San Diego and Google, among others. The 0,000 contract with Loma, which was approved in June, lasts two years, with an option to extend the contract for up to three more years.Funding for the first two years of the marketing contract was included in the current fiscal year budget. 1691

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An infectious disease expert for Scripps Health reminded San Diegans Tuesday to get influenza shots early this season to avoid potentially overloading the region's medical system during the COVID-19 pandemic."If you normally get the flu shot each year, then now is the time to make arrangements for your vaccination, and if you rarely or never get a shot, then this is the year to start doing it," said Dr. Siu Ming Geary, an internal medicine physician and vice president of primary care for Scripps Clinic Medical Group.Symptoms for typical seasonal influenza, such as fever, coughing, headache and fatigue, are similar to those for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and both viruses attack the respiratory system. It remains unclear how the two viruses might interact or affect overall sickness when infecting the same person."We don't yet know how bad this year's flu season will be, but it is possible to get both the coronavirus and the flu at the same time," Geary said. "Both can result in severe illness and complications, including hospitalization and death. While there is not a readily available vaccine for coronavirus, we do know that being vaccinated for influenza is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the flu."Last year, 105 people died from the flu in San Diego County, while the virus killed as many as 62,000 nationwide. The 2017-18 season was even worse, with 343 deaths in San Diego County and 79,000 nationwide."While some experts may disagree about the optimum timing to receive the flu shot, most, including those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend getting the shot by the end of October," Geary said. "As for this year, with the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, it's not too early to get the flu shot right now."While flu vaccine supplies have sometimes run thin in the past, that shouldn't be the case this year, Geary said. Pharmaceutical companies have produced up to 198 million doses of the vaccine for the U.S. market, a record-setting amount that tops last year's supply by 20 million. The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months or older, especially those who are at high risk for complications from the flu -- including people 65 years and older, children under the age of 2, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, neurological conditions, blood disorders, weakened immune systems and morbid obesity. This year's vaccine is designed to cover the four strains expected to be the most common in circulation during the 2020-21 influenza season: Influenza A (H1N1), influenza A (H3N2), influenza B (Victoria) and influenza B (Yamagata). 2743

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fatally stabbed his 66-year-old uncle during an argument in their Pacific Beach condominium was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in state prison.Randy Bautista Baisa, 39, pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge in connection with the 2018, killing of Merlino Bautista. Authorities said the defendant and the victim lived together.Prosecutors said Baisa -- who has significant mental health issues, according to the prosecution and defense -- stabbed his uncle 16 times, mostly in the back. One stab wound to the left arm severed an artery, the prosecutor said.Baisa previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but withdrew that plea in May.RELATED: Nephew arrested, accused of stabbing uncle to death in Pacific Beach apartment complexA neighbor at The Plaza Condominiums complex on Diamond Street called 911 in the early morning hours of Jan. 17, 2018, after the mortally wounded Bautista knocked on the door asking for help.Bautista was on the ground of a second-floor hallway when officers arrived on scene and immediately began administering medical aid, police said.He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where doctors pronounced him dead.Police found Baisa -- who they believed stabbed Bautista inside their residence -- at the complex and arrested him. 1331

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late. OSHA arrived and said we were in total compliance. It was a freak accident," said Jaha. The Hilton sent 10News the following statement: 1131

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A parolee who allegedly stabbed a pair of transients -- one fatally -- in two separate Midway District attacks on Thanksgiving Day was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Forrest Robert Brantley, 38, of Ventura County, is accused of fatally stabbing 55-year-old Robert Erbe in the neck at about 8 a.m. Nov. 28 outside a business in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, according to San Diego police.Brantley is also accused of stabbing another man three times in the back and arm on Sports Arena Boulevard about six hours prior to Erbe's slaying, according to Deputy District Attorney Will Hopkins. The prosecutor said that after stabbing the first victim around 2 a.m., Brantley returned to the area and approached Erbe and an unidentified second transient outside a 7-Eleven store.RELATED: Police identify man in deadly Thanksgiving Day Midway District stabbingHopkins said he offered Erbe drugs in a bag and then stabbed the victim while Erbe was looking through the bag.According to the prosecutor, Erbe asked Brantley why he stabbed him and Brantley responded, ``This is war,'' then stood over the victim and watched him bleed out.In the days following the stabbings, San Diego police circulated photographs of the defendant, which included images captured from surveillance footage on the San Diego trolley.Brantley was arrested in Ventura on Dec. 4 while walking near the intersection of the 101 Freeway and state Route 33, where officers recognized him from fugitive-suspect alerts, according to police in the coastal city north of Los Angeles.According to the prosecutor, Brantley posted on social media days prior to the stabbings that he was going to ``help the homeless,'' though his true intention was to target homeless victims.RELATED: Midway District murder suspect arrested in VenturaWhile the prosecution asked for no bail, San Diego County Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom set bail at million due to the ``totally senseless'' nature of the attacks on ``vulnerable victims,'' as well as the flight risk he believed Brantley represented. Brantley pleaded not guilty to the charges and is due back in court Dec. 24 for a readiness conference. The defendant has had a long history of run-ins with the law, including 34 arrests since 2000, according to Ventura police Cmdr. David Dickey said. ``The charges included burglary, robbery, elder abuse, drug-related offenses and property crimes. At the time of his (latest) arrest ... he was on active parole for attempted robbery, burglary, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon,'' Dickey said. His most public arrest, prior to the San Diego case, was a September 2016 incident, in which Brantley was arrested after allegedly breaking into a gift shop at a historic Spanish mission in downtown Ventura, stealing two crucifixes and using them to bludgeon five people, including a 75-year-old man, on nearby roadsides, according to Hopkins. 2977
