BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Wu Di, working as a secretary at a department at the elite Peking University, has to sacrifice privacy for lower rent. She now shares one room of a two-bedroom apartment, furnished with two single beds, and splits the monthly rent of 1,500 yuan (224 U.S. dollars) with a female friend.Wu moved to the new apartment two weeks ago. She used to share a two-bedroom apartment with a family of three, after she graduated from college in June 2010."I paid 1,250 yuan monthly. It was too much for me as I only earned 3,000 yuan a month," said Wu. "Besides, the family next door was very noisy."Although the current rent relieved her financial difficulty a bit, she hoped to pay less."Nearly one-third of my salary goes to rent. I am always very careful about spending money," she said.A survey done by the China Youth Daily Survey Center in December last year showed that 81.6 percent of 4,060 surveyed tenants around China thought that their rent had increased, and 80.6 percent said the soaring rent has greatly affected their lives.More and more young, white-collar Chinese have found themselves in an embarrassing situation: they have to bear a heavy financial burden from soaring rent and housing prices while not qualifying to enjoy preferential policies the government offers to low-income people, such as low-rent apartments.Lu Wei, a programmer working at a leading portable website, witnessed the housing rent increasing over the past four years."It would cost nearly 1,000 yuan less per month for a midium-decorated two-bedroom apartment in 2006," he said, now sharing a two-bedroom apartment with a friend near Beijing's downtown.Liu Qingzhu, research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, argued that housing rent has taken up too much of young people's income."Spending one-third or even a half of their income in housing rent is too much. They need money to do many other things, such as purchase decent clothes, study and for entertainment," Liu said. Also, rent is not the only thing troubling young tenants.During his four-and-a-half-year stay in Beijing, Lu has moved into new apartment five times.

XIANGTAN, Hunan, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Experts and rescuers said Wednesday there was little hope of finding seven miners trapped underground alive after a coal mine was flooded nearly one day earlier in Hunan Province. The flood happened at 11:38 p.m. Tuesday in a pit at the Yide Coal Mine in Xiangtan County, trapping seven miners at a depth of 89 meters, said Zhao Jun, one of the experts involved in the rescue operation. The miners were believed to be stranded in a tiny area and it is possible they have drowned, said Zhao, who is also the chief engineer of Hunan's Coal Industry Bureau. In addition, the oxygen density was tested to be 8 percent at a depth of 83 meters in the flooded pit, indicating less oxygen at the level where the miners were trapped, which increases the possibility of suffocation, rescuers said. However, rescuers are still trying to install more pumps to drain the water.A spokesman with the emergency rescue headquarters said Yide, a small mine that had doubled its annual output to 60,000 tonnes after recently merging with a neighboring mine, had been warned due to safety concerns, both orally and in writing, over the past four weeks.Senior executives and major shareholders of the mine are now in police custody.

BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin urged more efforts be made to promote industrialization, urbanization and agricultural modernization to achieve steady and fast economic development while maintaining social stability.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks during his inspection tour of east China's Shandong Province from Friday to Sunday.More efforts should be made to speed the transformation of the economic development pattern and promote the coordinated development of agricultural modernization, industrialization and urbanization, Jia said.Jia also urged efforts to step up transformation of agricultural development pattern, vigorously develop modern agriculture, attach great importance to grain production, and increase farmers' incomes through diversified channels, Jia said.He also called for more efforts to quicken the upgrading of traditional industries, develop strategic emerging industries, improve the core competitiveness of Chinese industries, and push forward energy savings, emission reductions and environmental protection.Jia said governments should strengthen public services and accelerate the establishment of cultural projects to meet people's daily-increasing spiritual and cultural needs.Jia also urged members of democratic parties and individuals without party affiliations to contribute their wisdom and resources to the nation's development.

NEW DELHI, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday called for continuous efforts to enhance the friendly relations between the two countries."In the past 60 years, China and India have overcome various difficulties in making strides forward and have gained rejuvenation," said Premier Wen when attending the celebration activities of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and India and the closing ceremony of the "Festival of China 2010 in India."Wen said that both sides have upheld the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence which they initiated together, sought good neighborliness, treated each other equally and worked for cooperation of mutual benefits, adding that these are the precious experiences obtained in the development of bilateral ties in more than half a century. The Chinese premier called on both sides to carry on the friendship generation after generation despite changes on the world arena and difficulties that may lie ahead.Wen stressed both China and India are in a key period of development, and that they should enhance political and strategic mutual trust, expand pragmatic cooperation in economy, trade and science and technology, strengthen coordination in regional and international affairs, upgrade the status and influence of developing nations, so as to make greater contributions to building a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity. The premier meanwhile expressed his gratitude to the people on both sides who have worked hard for the success of the Festival of China in India, and wished the Indian people happiness and healthiness in the coming new year. When addressing the ceremony, Singh said China is India's biggest neighbor, and that it is a consistent diplomatic objective of India to develop ties with China. He also hailed the China-India cooperation as a cornerstone for a century of Asia, saying it also has global and strategic significance.China and India are friends, not rivals, and there is enough room in the world for China and India to develop at the same time, Singh said.He added that the two countries should jointly enhance exchanges and cooperation in a bid to make new achievements in the China-India strategic and cooperative partnership.Wen arrived here Wednesday for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Singh.
