Jake Patterson, the 21-year-old Wisconsin man who kidnapped Jayme Closs after killing her parents, was sentenced Friday to two life-without-parole sentences for the homicides and 25 years for kidnapping.Several Closs family members gave statements at the sentencing, talking about how Patterson's crimes affected them.An attorney read a statement from Jayme, who was not in the courtroom."Jake Patterson took a lot of things that I love away from me. It makes me the most sad that he took away my mom and my dad," she said through her statement. " I used to love to go out with my friends. I love to go to school. I love to dance. He took all of those things away from me, too. Korean car makers Kia and Hyundai are recalling about 500,000 vehicles for issues that could cause the engine to catch fire. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A bill passed by the Missouri House would allow school districts to offer Bible study as an elective class.The bill, HB 267, would allow schools to teach the Bible from a historic perspective. The Bible history class could then be offered as an elective class at public high schools.The bill passed the House and is now in the state Senate. The lawmaker who proposed the law, Rep. Ben Baker (R-Neosho), is from southwest Missouri and works for a religious-affiliated college.If approved by the Senate and governor, a social studies teacher would teach the course. It would be up to individual school districts to offer the class as an elective.The current law allows for books like the Bible to be used as a reference in the classroom. This proposal would make the class solely about the Bible.“I think it is a really bad idea,” said Chase Peeples, the pastor at Kansas City United Church of Christ. “If it is my kid, who is teaching about the Bible and what perspective are they coming from? Why aren’t other sacred texts like the Quran or the Hindu text, Buddhist text? Which type of Christian is going to teach what interpretation of the Bible?”“If it is a subject matter that is offering education about an important piece of literature, it should not be prohibited,” Stephen Shields said.“Public schools should not be focused on religious education, I think there are basics a student should be learning in public school and religion is not one of them,” Bill Carriger said. 1510

Kids may be confused or afraid because of the protests. Experts say it's important for parents to start a conversation about race and tackle the tough questions.“If those questions don't get answered, that fear, that anxiety, that confusion just goes unaddressed,” said Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, a psychologist and author of the book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?”Tatum says African American parents tend to talk to their children about police brutality to explain how they can stay safe, and that they themselves could become a victim.“Most white parents are not worried about that happening to their white children,” said Tatum. “So, they're going to have a different kind of conversation, but it's important for all kids to recognize unfairness, injustice, and hopefully understand that they can be part of the solution."The conversation may be different depending on the child's age. A teenager may want to get involved with advocating for change. They may have had experiences with racism or know someone who has.Tatum says kids as young as 3 or 4 will notice racial differences. At that age, you may have to put it in a way they can understand.“Even a 5-year-old can understand the concept of unfairness,” said Tatum. “And you can even talk to a 5-year-old about a particular kind of unfairness we refer to as racism.”Tatum says all kids should know how to engage with people who are different from themselves.
