SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Navy has called off search and rescue efforts to find a Sailor from the USS Theodore Roosevelt who reportedly went overboard.Navy crews from the San Diego-based carrier and five other vessels ended the search at sunset on Saturday. Crews and the U.S. Coast Guard searched more than 607 square nautical miles for more than 55 hours off the coast of Southern California.Ships began rescue efforts after a lookout spotted what they believed to be a person in the water at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Navy.RELATED: San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt searching for Sailor overboardThe Navy ad the Sailor's family identified him as 20-year-old Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Garrett Goolsby of Texas.Goolsby reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in July after his initial training as an aviation ordnanceman in Pensacola, Fla. He was promoted to his current rank on Sept. 16. "The loss of our Sailor is felt deeply by all on board," said Capt. Eric Anduze, commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt. "The entire Theodore Roosevelt team sends our deepest condolences to the family of our missing shipmate."The Sailor's family was notified before the search stopped. The Navy said it has changed the Sailor's status to "deceased."Rear Admiral Doug Verissimo, commander of Carrier Strike Group Nine, added that the strike group, "sends our thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of our missing shipmate. I offer my thanks to all the Sailors and Coast Guardsmen who were involved in the search."The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego several days ago for an exercise at sea ahead of its second deployment of the year, according to USNI News. The ship is set to change its homeport from San Diego to Bremerton, Wash., for an overhaul in 2021. 1816

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man accused of killing a Church’s Chicken employee in Otay Mesa West waived extradition in Tennessee Monday. Investigators and U.S. Marshals tracked down Albert Lee Blake in Memphis last week.Blake was wanted for the murder of Maribel Ibanez and shooting of two other employees at the South San Diego County restaurant earlier this month.According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s office, Blake’s fugitive from justice without a warrant case was dismissed by the judge, which means San Diego authorities will head to Tennessee and pick him up and bring him back to answer to charges in San Diego.RELATED: Suspect in Church's Chicken shooting arrested in MemphisIn addition the murder charge, Blake is also facing two counts of attempted murder, accused of willfully and deliberately shooting Mario Rojas and Humberto Gerardo Cota.According to court documents, Blake has a lengthy criminal history dating back to the 1990s.In 2016, he was charged with counts of manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of firearm by a felon and more. He also violated probation earlier this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Summer is almost here, meaning a slew of wild, new entertainment at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Summer Safari returns to the Safari Park from May 25 to Sept. 1, bringing live music, arts and crafts, pop-up entertainment, up-close animal experiences, and more fun activities for families to enjoy.For the first time, the park will also host "family nights" on days the park is open until 8 p.m. On these nights, Monday and Tuesday from June 10 to July 30, special entertainment is planned, including bubble shows and evening cheetah runs.While Summer Safari is the big draw, guests will also be able to check out the park's new Walkabout Australia exhibit.
