(AP) -- The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for an immediate ban on all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The group adopted the sweeping stance at a policy-making meeting in San Diego. It aims to lobby for state and federal laws, regulations or legal action to achieve a ban, but the industry is sure to fight back. The AMA cited a surge in underage teen use of e-cigarettes, which typically heat a solution that contains nicotine.“It’s simple, we must keep nicotine products out of the hands of young people.” Dr. Patrice Harris, AMA’s president, said in a statement.RELATED: DEA says marijuana vaping has health risksThe doctors’ group said a separate health issue also prompted its action — the recent U.S. outbreak of lung illnesses linked to vaping. Most of those sickened said they vaped THC, the high-inducing ingredient in marijuana, not nicotine. Officials believe a thickening agent used in black market THC vaping products may be a culprit. The outbreak has “shined a light on the fact that we have very little evidence about the short- and long-term health consequences of e-cigarettes and vaping products,” Harris said. About 2,100 people have gotten sick; 42 have died. The AMA has previously sought bans on e-cigarette flavors and ads. Some observers say the AMA’s position is flawed and has little chance of achieving a sweeping ban.“I would be 100% with the AMA if they were seeking a ban on all tobacco products that are smoked, including e-cigarettes,” said Jonathan Foulds, a tobacco addiction specialist at Penn State University. “But right now, nicotine electronic cigarettes are competing with and replacing the most harmful legal product in this country.”RELATED: 11 San Diego illnesses linked to vaping, officials sayGregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, a pro-vaping advocacy group, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made clear that its focus “is not store-bought nicotine vaping products, but illicit contaminated THC oil cartridges sold by drug dealers.”“It would be a mistake for adult smokers and their families to listen to these misguided prohibitionists, as the evidence continues to indicate that adult smokers who switch to nicotine vaping products greatly improve their health," Conley said. The AMA policy calls for a ban of vaping products not approved to help people quit. But so far, none have been reviewed or approved for that use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Stephanie Caccomo, an FDA press officer, said the agency is “committed to doing everything we can to prevent kids from using tobacco products and will continue to develop a policy approach that aligns with that concern.”Juul Labs, the nation’s biggest e-cigarette maker, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.RELATED: Los Angeles County reports 1st vaping-related death as CDC issues e-cigarette warningE-cigarettes first appeared in the U.S. more than a decade ago and have grown in popularity despite little research on their long-term effects. The FDA has been widely criticized for repeatedly pushing back its own deadline to begin reviewing thousands of vaping products on the market, at one point until 2022. The deadline is now next May.___AP writer Matthew Perrone in Washington contributed to this report.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. "AT&T hiring Michael Cohen as a political consultant was a big mistake," the company's CEO Randall Stephenson said Friday morning.AT&T paid Cohen, President Trump's personal lawyer and fixer, 0,000 through a contract that ended in December 2017.The payments are now under scrutiny in part because Cohen is under federal investigation."To be clear, everything we did was done according to the law and entirely legitimate. But the fact is, our past association with Cohen was a serious misjudgment," Stephenson wrote in a memo to employees."In this instance, our Washington D.C. team's vetting process clearly failed, and I take responsibility for that," he added.Stephenson announced that Bob Quinn, one of the executives involved in the Cohen deal, "will be retiring."Quinn was in charge of AT&T's legislative affairs operation in Washington.Stephenson expressed regret to the company's employees, citing the negative attention around AT&T in recent days."To all of you who work tirelessly every day to serve customers and represent the brand proudly, thank you. My personal commitment to you is -- we will do better," he wrote.Information about the business arrangement has tricked out for several days.It was first revealed by Stormy Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti on Tuesday.Avenatti said he was aware of four months of payments to Cohen totaling 0,000. But AT&T had Cohen under contract for virtually all of 2017 for ,000 a month. On Thursday a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that AT&T paid Cohen 0,000 for the year.  1587

Las Vegas is getting set to host the first major event since the 1 October shooting. The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon has 40,000 runners registered for Sunday's races. As one of the rare events that shuts down the Las Vegas Strip, security concerns are heightened this year in light of the recent tragedy."Up until the shooting I honestly didn't even think about security as an issue and as soon as that happened, I was a little nervous," said Tom Sullivan, who will be running his first marathon.Captain Andy Walsh with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of security this year.He says marathon safety really changed after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2014, and 1 October changed it again."We've added some counter-sniper surveillance posts along the route," Walsh said. "We're going to have coverage from our helicopter unit."He added there will be 350 officers on the ground plus several large vehicles like dump trucks and buses to act as makeshift barriers. Some runners say crossing the finish line has become even more imperative now than ever."Just because this may be harder or scarier, it's not going to stop me," Sullivan said.Esther Reincke is dedicating her run to Cameron Robinson, who died in October's shooting.Robinson was her co-worker and running buddy."I can run now and Cameron can't," Reincke said. "That's really moving for me, to have somebody that was so young and so full of life and really just getting his life going."Before the race Sunday, 58 white cross memorials will be moved from the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign to a museum. If you are heading down to the marathon, there will be some road closures to keep in mind. Las Vegas Boulevard will be closed in both directions, between Sunset Road and Ogden Avenue from 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.  1819

You see the spellers on the stage at Scripps National Spelling Bee, but there’s a critical player in the competition who you hear more than see.Dr. Jacques Bailly is the Bee’s official pronouncer, and to the spellers, he’s a celebrity. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through. He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. Because it's amazing how that helps.”He believes competing in the National Spelling Bee opens doors for spellers to worlds they’ve never seen before at a critical age.“Doors to chemistry, doors to concert instruments, doors to culture of any sort,” he says. “It's the words that describe our world.”Dr. Bailly finds satisfaction in spelling, as well as sharing his passion with the next generation.“I just love doing this,” he says. 1542
