ISLAMABAD, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan and China on Saturday officially launched the Pakistan-China Friendship Year of 2011 in Islamabad, which will feature a year-long celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.Addressing a ceremony in the Pakistan-China Friendship Center, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said a series of events and activities will begin countrywide with the start of 2011, which was declared as the Year of Friendship by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani during Wen's visit to Pakistan in December.Qureshi termed the ceremony held in the friendship center as significant, saying the cultural complex itself, recently inaugurated by Wen and Gilani, is a symbol of the friendship between the two neighbors.Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian said the Chinese premier paid a successful and historic visit to Pakistan and the year of 2010 witnessed a continued, stable and vigorous growth of the strategic partnership of bilateral cooperation.Liu said China and Pakistan will hold a series of wonderful commemorative activities covering such fields as politics, economy, culture, education, sports, military and others in the new year.He believed that all the activities will further promote mutual understanding and brotherly friendship between the two peoples and bring the all-weather relations to a new high.At the ceremony, Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir conveyed the congratulatory messages from Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on the commencement of the Pakistan-China Friendship Year.
BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday proposed emergency consultations among the heads of delegation to the Six-Party Talks next month as tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula."The Chinese side, after careful deliberation, proposes emergency consultations among the heads of delegation to the Six-Party Talks in early December in Beijing to exchange views on major issues of concern to the parties at present," said Wu Dawei, Chinese special representative for the Korean Peninsula affairs.It is China's latest move with regard to tensions on the peninsula, following the exchange of artillery fire Tuesday between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).The ROK and the United States on Sunday launched a four-day joint naval drill in waters west of the divided Korean Peninsula, the U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington joined the drill.A statement from the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) said it "demonstrates the strength" of the alliance between Seoul and Washington and their "commitment to regional stability through deterrence."But the DPRK on Sunday blasted the ROK-U.S. joint exercises, saying they were bringing war to the Korean Peninsula.China has repeatedly called for calm and restraint, urging the resumption of the stalled Six-Party Talks among China, the DPRK, the United States, the ROK, Russia and Japan.Wu told a press conference the consultations would aim to properly address the situation on the Korean Peninsula and were in accordance with the Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks issued on Sept. 19, 2005.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day in 1947, the assembly passed a resolution on the partition of Palestine.Each year, the assembly's Committee on the Exercise of Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People holds a special meeting in observance of the Day of Solidarity.
WUHAN, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) - Chinese courts would seek to create their own management system for authenticating judicial evidence within the next five years, said Su Zelin, vice president of the Supreme People's Court.Su made the remarks Monday during a meeting held in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province.The proposed system, which would further clarify the courts' working procedures and protocols while examining and verifying authenticated evidence, would be based on the current system administered by the Ministry of Justice, said Su.The Supreme People's Court plans to build its own forensic lab and relevant specialist pool to ensure the neutrality and authenticity of evidence used in court proceedings, Su added.
HAIKOU, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China will provide more support for the country's religious communities in their international exchanges and communications, said Wang Zuoan, director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs.Wang made the remarks at the 2011 national conference on religious work held in South China' s Hainan Province on Monday.The administration will actively support religious circles in China to promote the concept of religious harmony during the first World Interfaith Harmony Week, which has been recognized by the United Nations and will be held in the first week of February, Wang said.Additionally, Wang said that the country is working to streamline the social security system to further benefit religious personnel.
