PARIS, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese delegation of human rights researchers on Friday had a detailed exchange of views on human rights issues with its French hosts during a four-day visit.     The delegation, led by Luo Haocai, vice chairman of the 10th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, provided a broad introduction to the great progress the People's Republic of China had achieved on human rights since its founding 60 years ago, especially over the 30-year period since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy.     The delegation expounded China's views and positions on human rights, and expressed its willingness to further promote exchanges and cooperation on human rights between the two countries.     During a meeting with Michel Forst, secretary general of the National Consultative Commission of Human Rights in France, Luo, also president of the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS), said human rights exchanges between China and France were to be deepened and extended as the two countries' friendship developed. The two sides could promote mutual understanding and broaden common ground in the communication process to better contribute to the world's human rights cause and world harmony.     Forst lauded China's human rights progress made concurrently with remarkable economic achievements, and said he was impressed by the universality and effectiveness of the work of the CSHRS.     Forst said he believed China would have much more influence in international human rights affairs along with the further promotion of its international status.     When talking with Pierre Bercis, president of New Human Rights League, Luo said China's theory and opinion of human rights was based on the principles of international human rights combined with China's own situation.     China stressed the unification of the universality and speciality of human rights, emphasized the right of survival and the right of development as the two basic human rights, encouraged equal communication and cooperation on international human rights, and opposed confrontation on human rights issues, Luo said. Pierre Bercis agreed with Luo's opinion.     While meeting Francis Verillaud, deputy president of Institute of political sciences of Paris, Luo hoped Chinese and French universities could strengthen exchanges and cooperation on human rights research, especially on human rights law, as a comprehensive law was the basis of human rights protection.     After the visit to France, the Chinese delegation will visit Belgium, the EU headquarters and Iceland.

HOHHOT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The key to social harmony and stability in China is to strengthen and improve the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi Jinping, Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a tour of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Xi said issues concerning economic development and social stability were top priority in the country's minority areas during his tour from Aug. 22 to 25.     He visited villages, customs posts, companies, communities and schools in Hulun Buir, Manzhouli, Baotou, Erdos, and Hohhot. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo.     He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties.     Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China.     In a separate meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Steinberg reiterated that the United States would continue with the one-China policy and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were considered by the U.S. government the crucial principle in handling bilateral ties.     After expounding China's stance on Taiwan and issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang, Xi said respect and care for each side's core interests and major concerns was the key to the healthy and steady growth of ties.     Xi called on the U.S. side to handle concerned issues in a "prudent" and "appropriate" way, to safeguard China-U.S. relations.     Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January.     The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said.     Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour.     "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi.     "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said. 

CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer? She was born and grew up in Xinjiang, but she cannot speak Chinese (Mandarin); She has 11 children and many many grand children (a lot of them live abroad); she was once one of the richest women in China; she had been a representative for her people in the highest political body in China and had gushed so much praises for the Chinese government...," Weldon, a netizen in Canberra, said in a follow-up post to Sheridan's article.     "'Extermination of Uygur cultural?' or 'Ethnic cleansing?' or 'Suppressing the minority people?' or 'A woman compassionate for her cause?', I am confused," he said.     Jonny of China called the report "another anti-Chinese rant."     "I did not read all the replies. I did not need to. Most that Iread succinctly corrected your bias," he said.     "The minorities in China including the Tibetans which you again focus on are given favored treatment... Greg your obvious ignorance of China is appalling for a person who writes about international affairs," Jonny added.     A netizen named David said Australia's invitation for Rebiya was wrong.     "Let's imagine what will happen if Australians invite Bin Laden to Sydney to give a speech with topic like 'How to end the U.S. rule around the globe and fight for the rights for all Muslims," he said.     Sharon of Brissy called Sheridan's article "a load of rubbish."     "Get your facts right before you start making bias reporting. The Uygurs get a lot of privileges as compared to the Hans. Plus during the ethnic riots were incited by the Uygurs with the majority who died are Hans," she said.     GMK of Gold Coast, who described himself as a "war veteran -- married to a traditional Australian-Chinese lady with a young son, and a frequent visitor to China," said he was puzzled about this media/Australian government-driven fantasy.     "That is their China and the Chinese, which is being produced. It is nothing like reality," he said.     The 56 separate and distinct ethnic groups within the borders of China all "have their cultural sensitivities guaranteed" by the Chinese government, he noted.     Yue, a netizen in Melbourne, said he did not understand why Western nations always have a prejudice against China.     "Why Western countries always see people instigating terror and hatred in China as a hero? Why do they always believe words said by these people rather than government?" he asked.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun has pledged to strengthen cooperation between Chinese and foreign media and to facilitate foreign media coverage of China. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said.
