Karen Mallard, a Virginia teacher who is also one of many Democrats challenging Rep. Scott Taylor for seat representing Virginia's second district, recently posted a video of her sawing an AR-15 apart. She said she did it to take a "a personal stand for gun safety," and is not backing down."We own the gun so we destroyed it and took it straight to the police department and dropped it off. I wanted there to be one less gun and to do something about gun violence," said Mallard. The video has been viewed more than a million times on her Facebook page. It's also drawing a lot of negative comments. Some people are saying destroying the rifle won't keep students safe. Some are saying what Mallard did was illegal."It is all to intimidate me and I will not be intimated. And I'm going to fight gun reform, for our children and for our community," said Mallard."Sawing off the end of a rifle barrel would probably not destroy it," said Virginia attorney Eric Lockie. "But if it shortened the barrel to under 16 inches, sawing off the end would make it immediately illegal and it`s a very bad idea.""I knew exactly what I was doing," Mallard said. "The gun was inoperable before I cut it. And we took it completely apart. And we didn't put all that on video because I wanted to get the message to the students that I was standing with them."Virginia Beach Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the gun was in their possession and waiting to be picked up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. LA JOLLA, CA (KGTV)-- The COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the arts, with live music and theater on hold. But the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla is moving forward with their 20-21 performance season. From Grammy nominated singers to comedians they have found a way to kickoff their year"Our Arts and Ideas season brings performers and intellectuals from a diversity of backgrounds, talents, and passions to share the arts with everyone, " says JCC board member Laurie Greenberg. "Which is incredibly important at this time." And for the first time, the JCC's cultural season will be all virtual."I think it's incredibly important because the arts broaden horizons, they give us new experiences. They give a little bit of an escape which we all need right now. It's really important that we can offer this arts and ideas season, as well as our other arts, and cultural programming to the community right now."And one of the great things about the new season, is it's being offered for free."What we're hoping to do is have this season entirely under written so that we're able to offer the entire season without charge. While at the same time. still be able to bring high quality performers, who will give us new experiences and new connections .It's really through the generosity of our donors."The Arts and Ideas season runs from October through June. Also, the JCC youth theater will perform outside, and stream virtually. 1447

Jamal Khashoggi's fiancée implored President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump "to help shed light on" his disappearance in an op-ed published by The Washington Post on Tuesday evening.Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist, vanished October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. As a columnist for the Post, Khashoggi was a frequent critic of the Saudi regime. On Saturday, Turkish officials told the Post that Khashoggi had been killed at the Saudi consulate. CNN has not been able to independently confirm these reports, and the Saudi government has denied them.Khashoggi was at the consulate to obtain paperwork so he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.Cengiz writes in the Post op-ed, "I implore President Trump and first lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal's disappearance."Trump said Monday that he was "concerned" about reports of Khashoggi's disappearance.Cengiz wrote in the op-ed that Khashoggi had gone to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul "despite being somewhat concerned that he could be in danger." He had no warrant for his arrest in Saudi Arabia and didn't think that the tensions between himself and the Saudi royal family were at a dangerous level."In other words, he did not mind walking into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul because he did not believe that something bad could happen on Turkish soil," Cengiz wrote. "It would be a violation of international law to harm, arrest or detain people at a diplomatic mission, he said, and noted that no such thing had ever happened in Turkey's history."After three hours of waiting, Cengiz was told that Khashoggi had already left but she says "there's no proof that he came out.""Although my hope slowly fades away each passing day," Cengiz writes, "I remain confident that Jamal is still alive."Trump had spoken about Khashoggi's disappearance briefly with reporters on Monday."I don't like hearing about it, and hopefully that will sort itself out. Right now, nobody knows anything about it," he said."There's some pretty bad stories about it," Trump added. "I do not like it."Cengiz urged Saudi Arabia, "especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate."Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Saudi Arabia to release surveillance footage to prove that Khashoggi left the consulate."Although this incident could potentially fuel a political crisis between the two nations, let us not lose sight of the human aspect of what happened," Cengiz writes."Jamal is a valuable person, an exemplary thinker and a courageous man who has been fighting for his principles. I don't know how I can keep living if he was abducted or killed in Turkey." 2766
