The US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Black Lives Matter protest organizer Deray Mckesson.A Louisiana police officer had sued to hold Mckesson accountable for injuries the officer sustained in 2016 when he was hit by a heavy object.Mckesson didn't throw the object. The person who did is still unidentified.A lower court ruling had allowed the suit to move forward.Critics said the decision would dismantle the Civil Rights era precedent safeguarding the first amendment right to protest. The Supreme Court's decision wiped away the earlier ruling, sending the case back to the lower courts to further review Louisiana law.The justices ruled the case needed more guidance from state courts before important constitutional questions are considered. 758

The road to the White House clearly goes through the state of Michigan as both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have been actively campaigning in the state.Michigan has been a state hard-hit economically in recent years as the once thriving auto industry Nationally, the number of auto jobs has declined amid the pandemic. The auto industry has lost nearly 100,000 jobs this year.At the start of the century, there were more than 1.3 million US auto jobs. When Barack Obama took office, that number had dropped by 50%. During his tenure, the auto industry regained a portion of those jobs lost. But any gains from a revamped trade agreement had yet to be realized in the auto industry based on Bureau of Labor Statistics figures. On Thursday, Joe Biden said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper the new USMCA agreement that replaced NAFTA is an upgrade, but failed to give President Donald Trump for securing the agreement."But look what the overall trade policy has done even with NAFTA. We now have this gigantic deficit in trade with Mexico. Not because NAFTA wasn't made better, because overall trade policy and how he deals with it made everything worse," Biden said.Biden was asked whether Trump should be given credit for the USMCA. Biden said the Obama White House was unable to renegotiate NAFTA because of Congress. For the first two years of the Obama administration, both the House and Senate were held by Democrats.“Because we had a Republican Congress that wouldn't go along with us renegotiating,” Biden told Tapper. In 2008, both Biden and Obama campaigned on changing the US trade agreement between Mexico and Canada. The USMCA, which became effective this year, was amended by Congress, but ultimately won bipartisan support from leaders of both party. The interview with Tapper was taped in Michigan and aired hours before Trump held a campaign rally in the state. On Monday, Trump said, “Biden supported NAFTA. He supported China’s entry into the World Trade Organization. Two disasters. The most disastrous trade deals in history, both of them. I can’t tell you which was worse; they were both terrible.” 2125

The terms "signing bonus: and "recruiting" are usually reserved fro top-paid professional athletes. Now add nurses to that list.Hospitals across the country are facing a shortage of nurses, and they're stepping up the incentives to fill the jobs.Patients aren't the only ones happy that Christina Predo is working at UCHealth. After all, the hospital gave her a ,000 signing bonus as an incentive to take the job."Other offers before that hadn't even come close," Predo said.Predo needed to find a job where her husband was being relocated. With several offers on the table, in the end it was UCHealth's signing bonus and other perks that sealed the deal."They offered all sorts of help to help move here," Predo said. "They offered someone to actually find me a neighborhood to live in which was awesome. None of the other hospitals actually offered to do that."What's behind the big bonuses? A shortage of nurses. With more than 500,000 seasoned registered nurses expected to retire by 2022, there's a projected need for 1.1 million new nurses to avoid a shortage.Hospitals across the country, including UCHealth, are feeling that crunch already."Well I'll tell you what, we have about 300 positions open," said Kathy Howell, Chief Nursing Executive at UCHealth.Howell says growth has created a greater demand for nurses, and a good economy means more nurses are opting to retire. That's why there's a concerted effort to make the offer to work at UCHealth as attractive as possible, even allowing out-of-state nurses to try out the hospital for a year and covering their housing costs."They go from assignment to assignment within our health system," Howell says. "We also give them a housing stipend, and we usually convert between 35 and 40 percent of them to full-time employees."Most new nurse hires get around ,000 to sign, which Howell doesn't think is out of line."When you look at what turnover of nurses costs and what not having the right nursing complement is to your hospital," Howell says. "That is a very reasonable investment."Ultimately, Howell says it's about delivering the right care to patients, and creating the right environment for the nurses they hire."It's a real comradery. Everyone is super super nice, you really have a say in what you're doing here, your opinion actually matters you don't feel like a number," Predo said.A new way to fill the need for nurses, with a payoff, multifold. 2476
