OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Edmond, Oklahoma teacher is offering free rides to teachers trying to get to the Capitol for the walkout."I couldn’t tell you how many people have been in this car," Troy Frieling said. "I have no idea. I’ve had children, administrators, support staff, just teachers in general."For the last eight days, Troy Frieling has shuttled people to and from the Capitol from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. He picks them up at their cars parked in neighborhoods a few miles away and drops them off just a few steps from the rally.Frieling is a teacher himself and so is his wife."Honestly I wanted to be able to serve the teachers," Frieling said. "I just didn’t feel like my time standing in line up there was going to help anything."He said he has picked up some of the same people day after day.A ride in Frieling's truck is completely free."They’ve asked me, 'Do you want donations?' and I’m like, 'No, it wouldn’t be a free ride if you gave me donations,'" he saidHe said he has found a few dollars left behind in his truck. The only thing he asks of his passengers is they sign a poster in his car. He's already filled up one poster and has hundreds on his second poster."It took five minutes off our day, but it’s also refreshing after such a long week and a half to continue to see the community being helpful and supportive," Randi Mahoney, a teacher at Ralph Downs in Ponca City, said.At the end of the day, Frieling brings them back to their cars.  1494

(AP) — A California judge on Friday rejected the plea deals of two men who were charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter after a 2016 California warehouse fire.In handing down his decision, Judge James Cramer said 48-year-old Derick Almena didn't accept "full responsibility and remorse" for the fatal blaze which occurred during an unlicensed concert at the dilapidated Oakland warehouse known as the "Ghost Ship."The plea deal had called for Almena to be sentenced to nine years in prison and 28-year-old Max Harris to six years. OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) - People in Ocean Beach have hatched a (not-so) secret plan to bring a popular mermaid statue back to town."We’re go-getters. We’re not going to give in. This is going to be a mission," says Claudia Jack, the self-proclaimed leader of Team Mermaid.For three weeks in May and June, a mermaid statue sat atop Ross Rock near Sunset Cliffs. Nicknamed 'Marina', the statue brought tourists and locals to the area to take pictures.For some, it was a nuisance, bringing more traffic and trash. Jack says that's one reason they don't plan to put the mermaid back on the rock."It's my goal to get her repaired and put her somewhere that she'll be appreciated," she says.The mermaid was secretly removed in June by a group calling themselves the Cliffs Crew. For a while, no one knew what had happened to it. Jack says she knows where Marina is located but won't reveal her location."I have not revealed any names or whatever," she says. "It's very hush-hush. But it will come out in the end. In a happy way."Jack has enlisted the help of a few friends and artists to repair some minor damage to Marina. She's also trying to get the entire community involved. Earlier this month, she sent out 300 postcards with a picture of the mermaid on the front. The back simply read "Save the OB Mermaid" and had an email address.She says the response has been overwhelming."What little girl doesn't want to be a mermaid?" she asks.Jack plans to unveil Marina as a statue at the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade in December. After that, she plans to let local businesses bid for the rights to host the statue for a few months at a time. She says the money raised would be used for upkeep.Jack says she already has two local businesses who have expressed interest. After that, she wants to commission a bronze replica that can be a permanent statue near the Ocean Beach Pier.The hope is that Marina can become a local icon like the Cardiff Kook or the Lemon Grove Lemon."She's alive," says Jack.
