Fentanyl is driving drug overdose deaths in the U.S. overall, but in nearly half of the country, it’s a different story. Meth is the bigger killer, a new government report shows.Nationwide, most deaths still involve opioid drugs like fentanyl and heroin. But in 2017, the stimulant meth was the drug most frequently involved in deaths in four regions that include 19 states west of the Mississippi. The report released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the agency’s first geographic breakdown of deaths by drug. It’s based on 2017 figures when there were more than 70,000 overdose deaths in the U.S., two-thirds of them involving opioids.Fentanyl was involved in 39% of the deaths that year, followed by heroin, 23%, and cocaine, 21%. Those drugs top the list in the eastern part of the country.Methamphetamine was No. 4 nationwide, cited in 13% of overdose deaths. But in the four western regions, it was No. 1, at 21% to 38%. 964

Former Vice President Joe Biden says Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is on his short list for potential running mates should he clinch the Democratic nomination for president.Whitmer's has earned national attention in recent weeks for her response to the coronavirus pandemic. She has not been shy about her disappointment in the federal government's response, calling on the Trump administration to provide more medical equipment like ventilators and protective masks. She's even had some harsh words for President Donald Trump on social media more than once since the pandemic began.Trump fired back, criticizing the governor both online and during press conferences, even referring to her as "the woman from Michigan," a title Whitmer supporters have since 771

Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty Monday to paying ,000 to a fake charity that facilitated cheating when her daughter took the SATs.When she appeared in federal court in Boston, prosecutors recommended a sentence of four months prison time for the "Desperate Housewives" TV star for her role in the college admissions scandal. They also suggested a ,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release for the charge, which is a felony. The charity was associated with Rick Singer, who has confessed to helping wealthy parents cheat on standardized tests for their children. Singer also bribed college coaches to falsely designate students as recruited athletes, smoothing their path to admission, a criminal complaint says.Huffman and Singer exchanged emails on how to provide her daughter with extra time to take the SAT exam, the complaint says, and arranged for the girl to take the test in a location controlled by an administrator whom Singer had bribed.Huffman's daughter received an SAT score of 1420 out of a possible 1600 -- about 400 points higher than her Preliminary SAT exam a year earlier.Huffman later discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with Singer, the complaint says.Huffman agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in April. She was among 13 parents who have said they would plead guilty in the scam. Seventeen other parents, including actress Lori Loughlin, submitted not guilty pleas. A federal judge will have the final say on the outcome for Huffman and the other defendants.Huffman arrived at court Monday afternoon accompanied by her brother."I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions," the actress said in a statement early April."I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community. I want to apologize to them and, especially, I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly."Huffman's husband, actor William H. Macy, is not charged in the case. 2292

Hours after CNN anchor Chris Cuomo confirmed that he tested positive for the novel coronavirus, his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo showed just how important tough love could be in preventing the spread of the disease.During a Tuesday press conference, Andrew Cuomo told media members that just two weeks ago, his mother had been taking regular trips to his brother's house. The governor said that his mother was lonely during quarantine and wanted to be near her family. But being a cable news anchor during a global pandemic means exposing oneself to dozens of people every day — and possibly exposing oneself to the virus, even when taking proper social distancing into account."Yeah, I feel bad that she's couped up in the apartment too, but you bring her to the house, you expose her to a lot of things," Andrew Cuomo said. "You have the kids there; you have your wife there, you're coming and going, your wife is coming and going. You could expose her to the virus."It was at that point that the governor was inspired to enact "Matilda's Law" — named after the Cuomos' mother, Matilda. The order requires New Yorkers 70 and older and those with compromised immune systems and other health conditions to "stay home and limit home visitation to immediate family members or close friends in need of emergency assistance." Andrew Cuomo enacted the order along with the "New York State on PAUSE" executive order on March 20."If my brother still had my mother at his house...it would have seemed great and harmless, but now, we'd have a much different situation," Andrew Cuomo said. "Because if he's exposed, chances are she may have very well been exposed. Then we would have been looking at a very different situation than my brother sitting in his basement for two weeks."Chris Cuomo tweeted Tuesday that he's in good spirits and will remain self-isolated at his home for two weeks in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. 1951

Floyd did so much to advance the cause of Indian food and Indian people in America. He was generous, funny, and warm, and I've always wished I could turn back time and eat at Tabla. Sending love to his family. https://t.co/nLMm9ALwmW— Priya Krishna (@PKgourmet) March 25, 2020 289
