SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large. Magazine contributer Kevin Carey called UCSD "a research powerhouse" at the time of 2017's rankings and noted that roughly one-third of the school's population is made up of first-generation and low-income families."We are proud to be recognized as the leading public university in the nation for expanding educational opportunity for diverse students, conducting bold investigations that benefit all and infusing a service-oriented outlook into all of our research and teaching," said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.UCSD has received multiple high rankings on recent lists of the country and world's best universities. Money magazine deemed UCSD second in the U.S. while the Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked the school 15th.UCLA is ninth on Washington Monthly's list, while San Diego State and University of San Diego are 120th and 126th, respectively. 1510

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A City of San Diego employee says she was sexually harassed by her boss on the job and now the man accused of the harassment is asking the city to pay for his legal defense.The woman says her supervisor groped her and grabbed her arm hard enough to tear open a recent surgical wound, causing it to bleed. The parks and Rec Department employee alleges that her supervisor, Frank Cardenas, sexually harassed her, even touching her inappropriately at work.Josh Gruenberg is representing the city staffer and says she has put up with enough. "He pinned her legs against her desk in her cubicle he wrapped her up in his arms and pulled her close multiple times,” said Gruenberg.The victim says she rejected every overture Cardenas made. At one point, the victim says Cardenas told her "if she wanted to get the support to grow within the city she should only care what Cardenas thinks or wants.""He really tried to get her to put his trust in him and that it would be good for her career,” Gruenberg said.The lawsuit also claims that Cardenas gripped the victim’s arm so hard that he reopened a surgical incision, causing her to bleed at work."And all of this took place in the workspace. This was not something that involved the two of them going away for a weekend. This all took place on the job,” Gruenberg said.Cardenas declined a request for an interview. Monday night, the City of San Diego voted unanimously not to pay for Cardenas’s legal fees with city money and said they have no further comment. 1535

The non-profit based out of southeast San Diego hires inmates to work from the inside. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three men who took part in the shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident late last year pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter and assault charges.Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 27; and Freddy Sosa, 38, were previously facing murder charges in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old Marcanthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Yslas, who admitted to firing the shotgun, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedRamirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10. Sosa also faces eight years in prison and will be sentenced Nov. 15.A fourth defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, remains charged with murder and assault. He's due back in court next week for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. Weinberger remains out of custody on million bail.Prosecutors have said that Weinberger lived in the residence where Mendivil was shot in the predawn hours of Dec. 29. However, neither a motive for the slaying, nor the defendants' relationships to each other and the victim, have been disclosed.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting last Dec. 29, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., Dobbs said.Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati alleged during Yslas and Ramirez's arraignment earlier this year that both men entered the home masked and gloved.Yslas threatened another witness with the shotgun, then fired twice on Mendivil, the prosecutor said. The men then fled the scene in a vehicle, according to Nominati.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged in February in connection with the killing. 2030

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Uber and Lyft drivers hit San Diego roads Friday morning to tell everyone they passed to vote no on Proposition 22.Prop. 22 is a ballot measure that would make rideshare and delivery companies exempt from Assembly Bill 5, a new California law that classifies many "gig economy" workers as employees.AB 5 turns the 2018 state Supreme Court "Dynamex" decision into codified law. It says companies like Uber, Lyft and DoorDash have to classify their drivers as employees and not independent contractors under what's called the "ABC Test" of employment.That gives the drivers access to protections like minimum wage, unemployment insurance, time off and other protections not usually given to independent contractors.Prop. 22 would give the drivers some wage protection and health insurance subsidies, but not as much protection as AB 5."It strips us of all our rights," Lyft and Uber driver Tonje Ettesvoll said of Prop. 22. "We're talking unemployment, we're talking health benefits, we're talking sick days, family leave. If they win Proposition 22, all those things go out the window."Ettesvoll organized the car caravan, which went from the rideshare lot at San Diego International Airport to Lyft's San Diego headquarters on Morena Boulevard. About a dozen cars joined her on the road, decorated with signs and stickers urging people to vote no.At the end of the ride, Ettesvoll and other organizers gave out hand sanitizer and masks to drivers. They say Lyft and Uber don't provide those items, but still expect drivers to clean their cars between each passenger drop-off. Ettesvoll said that's another example of the companies putting profit over people.According to Ballotpedia, a website which tracks elections, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Postmates have spent 0 million combined to support Proposition 22, saying if it doesn't pass, they may have to shut down operations in California.Groups against Prop 22, mostly labor unions, have raised just under million.A court battle over the provisions of AB 5 has been going on all summer in San Francisco, with a judge recently granting an injunction to give the companies time to make a plan for compliance.Some drivers told ABC 10News they don't like AB 5 and plan to vote for Prop. 22. They worry the new rules would turn them into full-time employees and they'd lose some of their independence and ability to be their own boss.Ettesvoll and the drivers on Friday hope voters end the debate and force the companies' hands."They have had years to abide by the law," she said. "This isn't something new. That you have to pay your workers a minimum wage isn't new. That you have to have a certain amount of benefits for people isn't anything new. That if you're going to have independent contractors, we have to have some say in our work. That isn't new either." 2855
