(KGTV) — California State University's Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to make ethnic studies a graduation requirement.The vote will modify the university's general education requirements to include a course addressing ethnic studies and social justice, according to the college system. The one-course requirement will be implemented in the 2023-24 school year to allow time for faculty to develop plans and coursework."Our goal is for CSU students, from every major and in every workplace, to be leaders in creating a more just and equitable society," said CSU Chancellor Timothy White. "This action, by the CSU and for the CSU, lifts Ethnic Studies to a place of prominence in our curriculum, connects it with the voices and perspectives of other historically oppressed groups, and advances the field by applying the lens of social justice. It will empower our students to meet this moment in our nation’s history, giving them the knowledge, broad perspectives and skills needed to solve society’s most pressing problems. San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. The goal is to bring in even more events, including concerts, soccer games, weddings, birthday parties, fireworks, corporate softball, seminars and team building.  Its four key objectives are: Introduce, build and increase awareness of SDCCU StadiumPromote and Increase awareness and attendance of evnets atking place at SDCCU StadiumPosition SDCCU Stadium as the most desired venue in the city of San Diego host any and all types of eventsDrive additional revenue to the stadium. Isidro Cardenas, who enjoyed the tailgate scene at charger games, says he'd like more activity at the stadium “I’d like to see it used for the local sport avenue here in our San Diego County,” he said. “Whatever we can do to help along, so now that the Chargers are gone bring in more colleges to play there. The proposal also says the credit union would install five ATMs on site.The City Council will consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday.  A spokeswoman for the credit union said more details would be released if the city council approves the naming rights plan.   1810

SAN DEIGO (KGTV) - A family in City Heights is going to save about 90% on their electric bill thanks to the non-profit GRID Alternatives. The organization installed free solar on their roof for Mother's Day. Erika Rodriguez is a single mother of three and she told 10News she would not have been able to afford solar without the program. She'll own the panels as long as she lives at the house. If she moves, the panel stays. The construction team doing the work is a team of all women volunteers. GRID Alternatives is also hoping to get more women into solar-related jobs. Currently, women only make up 27% of solar jobs.  661

SAN DIEGO - (KGTV) Southern California's recent earthquakes have demand for emergency supply kits skyrocketing. Ready America is a manufacturing company in Vista. The company sells disaster supplies and emergency kits to big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. They are also sold on Amazon."Once people feel it, then it's real, and it's going to happen to me, and with Thursday's 6.4, there was a lot of demand. With the 7.1, which is the largest earthquake in 20 years, the demand has been unprecedented," said Jeff Primes, President of Ready America. The disaster kits include food and water with a five-year shelf life, a manually operated charging station, light sticks, first aid necessities, and more. There's even a pet carrier with emergency supplies for a dog or cat."From a one person three-day kit that starts at about retail, all the way to a four-person retail deluxe kit for about 0," said Primes.The company is also home to the Big Shaker Earthquake Simulator. It's used to show people what a 6.8 magnitude earthquake feels like and the damage it can do. "You really want to get under something sturdy, you want to get under a table such as this you want to drop, cover your head and neck and hold onto that table so that table doesn't jump around on you," said Trevyn Reese of Ready America. Reese said, resist the urge to run to your children."If you do need to get to your child quickly, it's recommended you get down on your hands and knees and crawl during an earthquake. Trying to run to your child right away is gonna start throwing you against all the hallways. There will be things falling down on you that can potentially cause harm, especially broken glass," said Reese.Another misconception, Reese says, is to run outside."It could potentially be harmful cause you don't always see those items that are around you," said Reese. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, well kind of. Cities across the U.S. still may be trying to deck the halls, but a COVID-19 Christmas just looks and feels different.For people of faith, a season full of worship and togetherness will be missed."They do feel isolated," said GlenRoy Watson, a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Watson’s congregation is made up of about 100 families."Normally at Christmas, we'd eat dinner and hang out and have a Christmas presentation," he said.This year, religious celebrations need to be held at home, but he had an idea."I'm just hoping that everyone will learn a little bit more about each one another and just continue to feel united," Watson said.He asked all families in his congregation to make a home video about their traditions or fond holiday memories to share with each other."It will be kind of like a mini movie," he said."For our Christmas tradition we read the story of Jesus Christ," congregation member Denise Cordero said as she sat with her young daughter by their Christmas tree and spoke to her iPhone camera.For church piano player VerLynn Brink, playing Christmas hymns for everyone at her church is what she will miss most."This is one of my favorite memories of Christmas," she said as she recorded a video on her phone while playing her piano. "I had one of my favorite memories of Christmas in France.”Now, she plays for an audience of one."It’ been a challenge, but I’ve tried to make a point every day to call somebody just so I feel connected," Brink said.She said she is looking forward to the virtual viewing party in the days ahead.At the McGuire home, they are trying to keep the magic of Christmas alive while still focusing on their faith."With this year being a little bit different, we have started some new traditions," Drew McGuire said.The family said they miss meeting with their church family more than ever."This year, I feel like a lot of people have struggled with things and there hasn’t been a lot to feel hopeful about these days," McGuire said.They hope the family video they’re making will help brighten others' days."Merry Christmas everyone," the family said in unison on their video recording.As the videos came pouring in to GlenRoy Watson, it's his family’s turn to record their own video."We love celebrating and learning more about the nativity," Watson said as he smiled at his family.So, even if most families' Christmas celebrations will take place on a living room couch instead of a church pew, the message is the same."We love our savior, Jesus Christ and we still care and support each other even if we can't all be together," Watson said. 2707
