SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a man they say tried to sexually assault a woman in Little Italy before stealing her car. Police say the man, identified as Christopher Merron, 28, was arrested Monday on several charges, including assault with intent to commit a sex crime, brandishing a deadly weapon and auto theft. According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of India Street at 4:33 a.m. Sunday.RELATED: Man tries to sexually assault woman before stealing her car in Little Italy, police sayPolice say the man walked into Cafe Italia while the victim was cleaning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Donald Trump issued an order prohibiting Broadcom’s attempt to take over San Diego-based Qualcomm, CNBC and Bloomberg reported Monday.Broadcom had made several efforts to buy the chip maker in recent months. All offers were rejected by Qualcomm, which said the bids undervalued the company.The most recent offer, made in February, was over 1 billion. The possible takeover raised security concerns and led to an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S.The takeover attempts coincided with changes in corporate leadership.On Friday, Qualcomm announced executive Paul Jacobs -- the son of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs - "will no longer serve in an executive management capacity" but "will continue to serve on the Qualcomm Board."If Broadcom had been allowed to buy Qualcomm, it would have made the Singapore-based firm the world’s third-largest chip company behind Intel and Samsung.Any buyout would also have had a significant impact on San Diego's economy. 1042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday afternoon, the San Diego City Council rescinded regulations on short-term rentals in an 8-1 vote. On Aug. 1, the council voted 6-2 in favor of rules to regulate short-term vacation rentals in San Diego. The regulations were set to take effect in July 2019.  These regulations limited the rentals to primary residences, which would force some investors or owners of more than one home to sell their properties or rent them out long-term.City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was Monday’s lone vote against the repeal.The group Share San Diego called Monday's vote "an important step towards fair and effective short-term rental regulations." 690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New information from the Census Bureau shows that San Diego’s housing growth isn’t keeping up with our growth in population.Within the year spanning between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, San Diego saw its population increase by nearly 13,000 people.According to the Census Bureau, though the population has increased, the number of new homes being built is actually slowing down.When you compare housing growth between 2000 and 2007 and housing growth between 2010 and 2017, San Diego County saw a major decrease in growth of new housing. San Diego was also ranked the 11th most populated city in the United States, according to the new data. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood. The shooting happened on 40th Street near National Avenue around 5:13 p.m., according to Captain Tom Underwood with the San Diego Police Department. In an evening update, Underwood confirmed that the suspect of a machete attack died at the hospital. Wednesday night's events started earlier in the afternoon on Boston Avenue, where police responded to several 911 calls for the machete attack. The suspect, identified Thursday as 48-year-old Vaughn Harrison Denham, wielding the machete is said to have known the man he attacked. 10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. That man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.Shortly after the machete attack, Denham was pointed out to police by witnesses.Denham had a three to four-foot metal chain in his hands when an officer approached, which he then began to swing at the officer, police said. The officer backed up, according to witnesses, telling Denham to drop the chain. When he failed to comply the officer used a taser, but it was ineffective and Denham continued to approach. At this point the officer fired his weapon at Denham, hitting him at least once. "The suspect then fought police, who tried to take him into custody," Underwood said. "He was ultimately taken into custody (and) immediately transported to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not survive his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital."Those who know Denham told 10News he is usually a nice person, but he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack.
