EDINBURGH, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said Friday during a visit to Scotland that China hopes to strengthen cooperation with Scotland, especially in the areas of education, culture, tourism and finance.     Wang, who is on an official visit to Britain, spoke during a meeting with Alex Salmond, Scotland's first minister.     Both sides praised the friendship between China and Scotland and expressed a readiness to strengthen their cooperation as part of an effort to promote the all-round strategic partnership between China and Britain.     During the meeting, the two also exchanged views on how to tackle the global financial crisis.     "Currently we should further strengthen confidence in the market and recover the functions of the financial market as soon as possible," Wang said.     After the outbreak of the Asian financial crisis, China adopted a series of measures that pulled it through the trouble and helped to maintain the stability of the financial market, Wang said.     Salmond spoke highly of the economic stimulus packages arranged by the Chinese government to tackle the current financial crisis.     Wang arrived at Edinburgh on Friday after a visit to the Europe Union

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Portugal agreed here Wednesday to enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Portuguese parliament speaker Jaime Gama on Wednesday.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, spoke highly of China-Portugal relations and noted that China always conducted its ties with Portugal from a strategic, long-term perspective and is ready to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership. TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.

FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Kuwait signed five agreements here on Sunday in an effort to further the bilateral relations to a higher level.     The agreements covered fields of energy, finance, telecommunication, transportation and education, according a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
