SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt.She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt.After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic.Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. The Army veteran has spent the last two decades helping military veterans and their spouses find careers through massive job fairs at venues like Yankee Stadium.Now, they're going virtual."Really, no one understands what a virtual career fair is until they experience it," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot.While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two years ago the Norton Sound was docked in San Diego Bay and burned for several days. Now, San Diego is hiring an outside consultant to look into the cargo fire. San Diego Fire gave 10News a statement Friday. They didn’t offer specifics about what the consultant might recommend, but say the focus is to determine if any additional equipment or training is needed when dealing with emergencies on the bay. Back in 2017, Harbor Police told 10News, “It was to my understanding that the furthest a firefighter made it was 6 feet before they started getting pushed about the fire.” Looking back, even businesses remember how horrible the smoke was over the days the fire burned, “People stopped sitting outside and employees complained about it affecting their health.” says Edgewater Grill assistant manager, Sergio Velasco. While the smoke bellowed out of the ship for nearly a week, no one was injured and the fire stayed contained and didn’t spread to any other structures. (KGTV) - Nearly six years after it passed, Proposition B will be in front of two courts this week, with the future of San Diego pension reform on the line.Prop B was on the ballot in June of 2012 and passed with 65% of the vote. It promised to solve San Diego's pension crisis by giving new City hires a 401(k) style retirement plan instead of a pension. The change went into effect for all city hires except police officers.Since then, it's been mired in legal challenges.Shortly after it passed, union leaders sued, arguing that any changes to union employment agreements have to be negotiated first before they're placed on a ballot. They said that then-Mayor Jerry Sanders violated that rule when he openly campaigned for the Proposition in 2012.In 2015, the State Labor Board agreed with the union claims.That ruling went to the California 4th District Court of Appeals, who overturned the Labor Board's findings in 2017.In 2018, the State Supreme Court reversed the 4th District's ruling. The Supreme Court sent the issue back to the lower courts to decide what an appropriate "remedy" would be to Sanders' improper campaigning."They did not say 'Overturn Prop B.' They could have," says Reform California's Carl DeMaio, who wrote Proposition B. "They said, 'Hey, district court, find out how you punish the City of San Diego for this violation.' What’s the punishment? A slap on the wrist, a speeding ticket?"The 4th District will hold an open session on Monday, March 11 to begin that process. DeMaio says if the District Court rules to overturn Prop B, he plans to appeal that decision."Do you think they’ll actually overturn the citizens initiative? If they do, we will counter-sue on the punishment phase," says DeMaio.Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court will also look into the Proposition this week. On Friday, they'll decide whether or not to hear a case based on the First Amendment. Supporters of Prop B say the California Supreme Court's ruling violated Mayor Sanders' First Amendment rights of free speech and his ability to openly support or oppose items on a ballot."The issue is whether for not elected officials have first amendment rights," says DeMaio. "Can an elected official actually give an opinion on a ballot measure? I think yes. Even if I disagree with that opinion, it is their constitutional right.
