SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic. The agency says cruise lines will need to test safety protocols via mock voyages with volunteers before they can host passengers. Still, the order was the first movement on cruise ships since the CDC issued its no-sail order in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be."It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego County schools doing distance learning this fall, many parents worry their kids will miss out on important social interactions with peers.In fact, it was the number one concern cited by parents in a series of national surveys conducted earlier in the pandemic.Research on past pandemics shows quarantines can have a lasting impact on both children and adults.The American Psychological Association says “having limited access to peers and classmates can affect children’s emotional well-being, which can in turn affect their educational performance, learning and development.”“As humans, we all need that social interaction,” said UC San Diego associate professor Alison Wishard Guera. “What is does for your development I think is really different across the age ranges.”Wishard Guera said kids roughly 8 years and younger need to learn how to interact with others.“The opportunity to have conflicts. To learn how to resolve conflicts. To learn how to share materials. To learn how to coordinate their body in a classroom space with other people. They're going to be missing out on that,” she said.When children reach adolescence, around 10 or 11 years old, they start to lean on their friends for their identity, she said. With kids feeling more isolated from friends, “we’ve seen a big spike in depression and mental health challenges,” she said.In its push to reopen schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited research on past pandemics that found kids who were quarantined had post-traumatic stress scores that were four times higher than those who were not quarantined.And there’s some research suggesting the effects can linger. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Huey Lewis and The News fans disappointed by the band’s canceled concerts have a chance to enjoy its hit songs at a musical, Heart of Rock and Roll, set to debut at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September.Lewis, the band’s lead singer and namesake, announced Friday he was dealing with the sudden loss of his hearing."Two and a half months ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most my hearing," Lewis said in a message to his fans Friday. "Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can't hear music enough to sing."Lewis went on to explain that doctors believe he has the inner ear disorder Meniere's disease and said he should not perform until he improves."Needless to say, I feel horrible about this, and wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who've already bought tickets and were planning to come see us," Lewis added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego area residents are asking the area's top two prosecutors to investigate and prosecute Assemblymember Todd Gloria for alleged violations of the Political Reform Act. According to a letter sent to San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan and San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliot, Kathryn Burton and Mat Wahlstrom allege Gloria "repeatedly violated PRA section 85200 by soliciting and receiving multiple contributions to his Assembly 2020 Committee before filing a statement of intent to run for the Assembly in 2020." The letter says, "without filing that statement, the FPPC's manual makes clear, he could not lawfully receive any funds into his Assembly 2020 Committee." The letter goes on to read, "my clients have reason to believe that there is a conspiracy to launder campaign money from an illegal campaign committee controlled by Mr. Gloria to the San Diego County Democratic Party, to a candidate to replace Mr. Gloria in the Assembly, and to several sitting members of the Assembly." According to the California Secretary of State's website, before raising any campaign funds, state candidates file "Statements of Intention" to run for a specific office. Candidates can file Statements of Intention for more than one office. Team 10 obtained Gloria's signed statement of intention, which shows the state received it on August 13, 2019. That's after the campaign committee was opened and filed a Recipient Committee Campaign Statement. Officials with the California Fair Political Practices Commission tell 10News the Assemblymember called FPPC Enforcement earlier this week and self-reported.
