SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dangerous rescues are on the rise on the cliffs along San Diego's coastline.Broken bones, medical emergencies, even death: these are just some of the calls to San Diego Lifeguards, tasked with performing these rescues. According to a recent Team10 investigation, those calls to lifeguards have doubled in the past four years."We're out here assisting people on a weekly basis," lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said. "It's pretty dangerous; people can fall, people have fallen, people have died, people have suffered traumatic injuries."Romero said lifeguards average 70 to 100 rescues a year at Sunset Cliffs and Black's Beach. The less-serious calls have been anything from people getting stuck, to medical emergencies, to hikers simply getting lost. The more serious calls involved traumatic injuries and death.RELATED: Cliff, air rescues on the rise in San Diego CountyAccording to data 10News requested from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Lifeguards, there have been 74 cliff rescue calls from June 2017 to the beginning of October 2018. Of those calls, nine serious injuries and one death have occurred this year at Sunset Cliffs. Black's Beach had 11 serious injury calls.Romero said the uptick could be explained as the secret spots no longer being secret."We've seen population growth, tourism growth, social media growth...all affect just more people coming down," Romero said.Lifeguards are on duty 24/7 to help in these situations. Cliff rescues have become so common, rope skills are now as basic for them as work in the water.Carrying 40 to 50 pounds of gear each, typically seven lifeguards and three trucks respond to most cliff rescues. Romero said while each rescue is different, most take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.Resources are pulled from other areas along the beach. If rescue crews need to use a helicopter, the cost is more than ,000 an hour to operate.The rescues are paid for by taxpayers, provided by the city, no matter if the patient is a victim of an accident or reckless."We just ask people to bring their cell phones, pay attention to where they're going, have sturdy footwear," Romero said. 2193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the Valley Fire raged across parts of eastern San Diego County, emergency assistance workers put into action plans they'd been working on for months to handle the dual disaster of a wildfire during a pandemic."It completely changed our approach," says Red Cross Regional CEO Sean Mahoney.The Red Cross has been planning and training for months, knowing this situation would likely arise this fall.Mahoney says their plan included Temporary Evacuation Points instead of group shelters, hotel rooms for people who needed somewhere to stay, grab and go or delivery meals, and an emphasis on sanitation and health screenings to keep volunteers and evacuees safe."We planned for this as much as we possibly could, but exercise is just an exercise. Doing the real thing is where you have those real lessons learned," Mahoney says.During the Valley Fire, the Red Cross assisted 440 people in 174 families. They served around 9,000 meals and snacks.Mahoney says his staff's dedication, along with 107 volunteers who worked 12-hour shifts, helped things go smoothly.But not everything went according to plan. On the first night of evacuations, the Red Cross ran out of hotel rooms, especially for people who had pets. Some evacuees without RVs had to sleep in their cars.Mahoney says the busy Labor Day Weekend, combined with hotel capacity restrictions because of the coronavirus, leads to fewer available rooms.To make sure it doesn't happen again, Mahoney says the Red Cross is already working on backup plans to open limited group shelters, with social distancing put in place to keep people apart. He told 10News they've already scouted hundreds of locations around San Diego.Meanwhile, the San Diego Humane Society also put in new protocols for safety during the pandemic. They helped hundreds of animals during the Valley Fire, and say the most significant challenges were limiting contact with owners and making sure their field teams followed the rules about distancing and wearing masks."The more people you interact with, the more likely you are to come in contact with somebody who is transmitting coronavirus," says Lt. John Peaveler. "So, we've had our biggest safety precautions on that side."Both groups say they'll take all the Valley Fire experience and put it to use in the next disaster. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers arrested a driver who knocked over a light pole on Interstate 5, causing it to fall into the path of oncoming traffic Friday night.It happened on the northbound lanes of I-5 just before the State Route 163 connector.The driver of a white Chevy Impala went off the road crashed into two light poles, knocking one of the light poles onto the right lane and into oncoming traffic.CHP says at least seven cars smashed into the downed light pole, damaging the vehicles. However, there were no injuries.The driver of the Impala told CHP he merely fell asleep behind the wheel, but after a sobriety test, he was arrested.“He was arrested for DUI,” said Steve Jio, with the CHP. “Possibly drugs, and we’re taking him to our station to be evaluated."Three lanes of I-5 were closed off for about an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and the downed light pole.Crews plan to replace the light pole Saturday morning. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio topped the list. California's median home price as of November 2018 was 7,900, Zillow reported.
