MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An infant left inside a baby box at a northern Indiana fire department is safe and being cared for. The child was left in the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department's Safe Haven Baby Box in LaPorte County on Sunday. This was the second time in five months that the box has been used at this particular fire station, last November an infant was also left inside the box. “When this box was installed, we hoped that it would never be used," Coolspring Fire Chief Mike Pawlik said last November. "Yet we're thankful that it exists for cases just like the one."Baby boxes are safety incubators where mothers can anonymously surrender their newborn babies. The Safe Haven Law was authored by State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) in 2000 and allows parents who feel they are unable to care for an infant that is less than 30 days old to leave the child with staff at a designated safe haven location with no questions asked. The Safe Haven Boxes give parents a way to leave the child anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution“It is incredible to hear another infant’s life has been saved through the Safe Haven Law,” Merritt said. “This law provides overwhelmed parents with a safety net in a time of crisis, which could prevent the death of a baby. This is the second time in five months a baby has been discovered at this fire station, which shows people are aware of this law and this system is saving lives.”Last year, lawmakers approved a law allowing hospitals to install baby boxes where infants could be safely left inside. During the 2018 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed Senate Enrolled Act 340,  which allows fire stations that are staffed 24 hours a day to use baby boxes. 1791

LYON, France (AP) — French police say a Greek Orthodox priest has been shot while closing his church in the city of Lyon, and authorities are hunting for the assailant. A police official says the priest was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit in the abdomen on Saturday. The official says the priest is a Greek citizen and the attacker was alone and fired from a hunting rifle. On Twitter, the French Interior Ministry wrote "an event is underway near the Jean-Macé sector, in the 7th arrondissement in Lyon. Security and rescue forces are there. McClatchy, the publisher of more than two dozen daily newspapers across the country, will reduce its staff by approximately three and a half percent, cut expenses across the company, and implement other measures to save money, the company announced in an internal memo obtained by CNN on Tuesday.Craig Forman, president and chief executive officer of McClatchy, told employees in the memo that the decisions were "painful and difficult" but "necessary to protect and further our future." He placed blame, in part, on the decline in revenue from print advertising."Talented and passionate people who have dedicated their energy to our mission, colleagues we call friends and rely on everyday, will leave the company," Forman wrote. "We thank you all for your commitment to McClatchy and to local journalism and wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors."A spokesperson for the company told CNN that the staff reductions would affect nearly 140 employees.Forman said that the employees impacted have been notified. MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — As early as next week, you could start to see an improvement in the water quality in Martin County.Officials plan to start cleaning up some of the areas most impacted by algae. They hope to give residents some relief from the sight and smell of the algae and help the estuary recover from its damaging effects.Martin County Ecosystem Division Manager John Maehl said because the county declared a local state of emergency earlier this week, it can more quickly obtain grant funds from the Department of Environmental Protection to pay for and expedite clean up efforts.The plan is to get contracted clean up crews on the water early next week, possibly by Tuesday. Even before declaring the state of emergency, county officials had been interviewing and researching companies with technology they say can clean up the algae, without creating more harm to the environment.By next week, Maehl said at least a couple are prepared to get to work.In at least one case, they would be vacuuming the algae from the water.Exactly where the clean up will happen is unclear, but Maehl said the county has been surveying the area, looking to create a priority list of the places they will send crews to first.That could be areas such as Central Marine, typically hit hard by the thickest of the algae.“The really nasty stuff, try to get that out and take away the most noxious component of this and then let the estuary do its thing. The estuary is remarkably resilient,” Maehl said.This is the first year the county has taken on algae clean up effort, so it is a learning experience.“It’s a really complicated issue with a lot of different solutions and really the approach we’re taking is we’re throwing a lot of stuff against the wall and see what sticks,” Maehl said.Stuart resident Teresa Cooper is among those glad to see action being taken.She lives right along the water and can smell the stench of the algae while walking her dog.“I don’t walk him over there, so I just kind of keep him on the side, because it’s bothering me, I’m sure it’s bothering him,” Cooper said. “It hurts your throat and just smells very bad."Maehl said the county also hopes, by next week, to place booms in strategic areas to hold and collect algae. That could include putting a boom in canals leading to the St. Lucie Estuary to keep algae from flowing into the waterway.Maehl is not sure if the cleanup will last for weeks or months. 2457
