Good Samaritans and authorities rescued a couple in their 70s whose vehicle crashed into a Long Island canal following a collision with another vehicle Monday.Police say it happened when a Ford pickup truck and a Subaru were involved in a motor vehicle crash at Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, New York. When the Subaru backed up following the crash, police say it collided with a Mercury.The Mercury crashed through a fence and fell into a canal.Video shows the moment the car was partially submerged in the water.Five good Samaritans and two Suffolk County police officers jumped into the water to rescue the couple.Joseph Abitabile, 78, was driving the Mercury. He was rescued from the vehicle, along with his wife, Delores, 76, who was unconscious.An off-duty Lake Success police officer administered CPR, restoring the woman's pulse and breathing back to normal.The Abitabiles, one good Samaritan, the two Suffolk County officers and the driver of the Subaru were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. HARAHAN, La. — In Kimberly Broussard’s kitchen, there are layers upon layers of love.“I love to cook,” she said. “It's just yummy and it's full of cheese and it's gooey.”Broussard is in the midst of her new weekly tradition: making lasagna for someone she’s never met.“The thing weighs about six pounds. It’s pretty heavy,” she said.Broussard is a volunteer with Lasagna Love.“Food is love,” she said.It’s a program that began during the pandemic, in the kitchen of founder Rhiannon Menn.“I remember just feeling so helpless and watching people around me lose jobs, lose child care,” Menn said.So, the San Diego mom offered to make a meal for anyone in need in her area.“I posted to some local mom’s groups on Facebook, 'Hey, you know if you're struggling, whatever that looks like for you-- if it's financial, if it's emotional, if you're immunocompromised and can't go to the grocery store--my daughter and I are making extra meals. Like, please let us bring you dinner.' And people said yes,” she said.With that, Lasagna Love was born as people contacted Menn to ask if they could help, too. The registered nonprofit now has “Lasagna Mama and Papa” volunteers in all 50 states, with a website where you can request a meal or offer to make one.“I'm just so inspired and a little bit in awe of how many people there are that want to be part of this, spreading kindness,” Menn said.Back in Kimberly Broussard’s Louisiana kitchen, her latest lasagna will soon be ready to be dropped off to a family in need. She’s made nearly 20 for Lasagna Love.“Just the thought of families not being able to eat, it was just a way to help,” Broussard said, “and it's just a way to say, ‘hey, look, you know, yeah, you're struggling, but there are people out there that care.’”It’s a way of caring for one another, using food as a language of love. 1840

From football stadiums to movie theatres, the idea of large crowds is still terrifying to a lot of people during this pandemic, but a new invention that helps kill COVID-19 germs instantly could help get people back into some of the nation’s most beloved large venues.For Mark Zurevinski, who once traveled the globe managing shows for superstars, business disappeared in an instant this past spring. With both his employees and his own livelihood on the line, Zurevinski looked around at all those stadiums and decided to come up with a solution to help get people safely back into large spaces.“I saw everyone in the entertainment crossing their arms and waiting for the government to find a solution,” he said.In the middle of the pandemic, as businesses worldwide shut down, Zurevinski started a new business called Sani Pass.The company has developed a disinfecting channel walkthrough machine to kill the novel coronavirus. First, the machine takes your temperature, then nozzles spray a fine non-toxic disinfecting solution over your clothes and bags that kill any COVID germs you may have on you.One machine costs around ,000.“We’re not suggesting we’re a cure. We’re suggesting we are a part of a broader arsenal of products that need to be implemented in order to bring us back to some form of normalcy,” Zurevinski added.Zurevinski also knew that if you couldn't move people through the machine quickly, it wouldn't matter.It takes about eight seconds for one person to get a person disinfected in the Sani Pass. The company estimates they could get 55,000 people into a stadium in just 90 minutes.“I wanted to get people back into arena, back into theatres, back into stadiums. Those are large mass gatherings and in order to get people in there quick enough, we had to find a solution that was not 30 seconds, one minute, two minutes each,” he said.Aside from stadiums, Zurevinski is also in talks with some airports who are considering putting the Sani Pass in place. 1992

HARLEM, Manhattan — A 100-year-old woman in Harlem is serious about filling out the census. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools.
