Papa John won't leave Papa John's alone.The company has tried hard to distance itself from founder John Schnatter, who blamed the NFL for poor pizza sales last fall and then admitted using the N-word on a conference call this spring.Sales slumped, and Papa John's stock declined. CEO Steve Ritchie and the current leadership blame Schnatter, who stepped down as chairman in July.Schnatter told CNNMoney in an interview Tuesday that he's being scapegoated."You can't blame everything on two comments," he said. But he has mounted a scorched-earth campaign to drive Ritchie out of his job.In a letter to franchisees posted to his personal website on Monday, the founder said the company is struggling because of "rot at the top."In a statement, Papa John's called the accusations "untrue and disparaging," characterizing them as "a self-serving attempt to distract from the damaging impact his own words and actions have had on the company and our stakeholders.""John Schnatter also publicly supported Steve Ritchie's appointment as CEO at the end of last year," the statement said.Schnatter flipped that argument around."There's a little bit of a farce going on here," he said. "Steve Ritchie promises great things, and then bad things happen, and then he blames somebody else."Schnatter's lawyer Garland Kelley said the company allowed Schnatter's comments about the NFL and his use of the racial slur to be misrepresented in the press."There's a critical disconnect between what John actually says and how the company permits it to be portrayed publicly," Kelley said. "We think there's a reason this is occurring."In July, Forbes reported that Schnatter had used the N-word while on a conference call with his marketing agency."Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s," Schnatter reportedly said during a training on how to avoid gaffes like the NFL comments. Forbes said Schnatter was complaining that Sanders didn't receive backlash, even though his comments were worse than Schnatter's own. The protests sparked a controversy, and the NFL ultimately ruled that players can't kneel during the anthem."I felt like the situation was not a winning situation for the fans, the sponsors, the players and the owners," he continued.A few months after Schnatter called out NFL leadership, Papa John's ended its NFL sponsorship. PALATINE, Ill. – Art education in grade schools has historically struggled with resources and funding. As millions turn to the arts to deal with stress and anxiety, educators are being forced to stretch the limits of their creativity. This fall, they say teaching acting, music and art will be more challenging than ever.“We do lots of different things. We do ceramics. We do 3D sculpture. We do drawing and painting. And it's really a hands-on program,” said elementary school art teacher Paul Dombrowski.Dombrowski is two years away from retirement and trying to relearn how to teach.“COVID, it has really turned the educational world upside down and we're kind of baptism by fire of having to figure out what we're going to do and how we can service these kids,” he said.High school theater director Britnee Kenyon’s district decided on a full remote program weeks ago.“For me, that meant really reconfiguring our entire theater program, theatrical season, everything, because as most people know theater needs an audience and theater needs people,” said Kenyon.One of her six productions had to be eliminated. She’s now dealing with streaming rights to put on her productions online.But the recent streaming success of “Hamilton” has proven that the show can go on.“It's not in the way that we expected but we can still do theater and families can watch it,” said Kenyon. “Maybe on the bright side, families from all over the country will now be able to watch it.”She’s still working out how her acting students will learn, rehearse and perform this year.“Not being able to play theater games together, not being able to make eye contact with a human being and believe that they're making eye contact with you back, because you're actually looking at your screen, that in and of itself is a conundrum that will be really interesting to figure out,” said Kenyon.For Dombrowski, a diabetic making him high-risk for getting coronavirus, his classes will all be virtual.“I'm kind of scared to have to teach it through the computer,” he said. “I'm looking at a screen of 28 children. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents.Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents -- less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show.But more than one-third of school-age children who died in those school-transportation-related wrecks -- 102 children -- were on foot when they were killed, including some hit by school buses, the data show.
