SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man charged with murder and arson for allegedly setting a fire that killed his parents and sister at the family's Logan Heights home had previously made statements about burning the house down and set fires around the home on several prior occasions, according to preliminary hearing testimony today.Wilber Romero, 27, is accused of setting the Oct. 13, 2019, blaze that sparked at around 4:30 a.m. and killed the defendant's father, Jose Antonio Romero, 44; his mother, Nicalasa ``Nico'' Maya-Romero, 46, and his sister, Iris Romero, 21.The defendant's father was found dead inside the home at 3114 Clay Ave., while his mother and sister died at a hospital. Romero's then-24-year-old sister, Wendy, and his then-17-year-old brother, Angel, were injured in the fire. Bystanders pulled Wendy out of the home, while Angel escaped through a window.The preliminary hearing will determine whether Romero will stand trial for charges that could have him facing life imprisonment if convicted. The hearing will resume Thursday with additional testimony. He was detained near the scene.Detective Gary Phillips testified that a lighter was found on the defendant on Oct. 13, and that Romero was unscathed, without any burns or soot on his clothing or body. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the city of San Diego is one of four cities in the state that will receive 0,000 in state funding to support residents affected by power shutoffs due to the threat of wildfires.While visiting Sonoma County emergency responders, local officials and residents affected by the Kincade Fire, Newsom announced the establishment of the Local Government Public Safety Power Shutoffs Resiliency Program, which will provide funding to local governments to maintain power service to high- risk areas affected by power shutoffs.San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose and Oakland will each receive 0,000 in state funding through the program and all 58 counties in the state will receive at least 0,000 each. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications.The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Friday identified a man and his mother who died in a murder-suicide in Borrego Springs.Deputies responding to a request for a welfare check Wednesday morning found the bodies of Corey Sides, 43, and Ann Sides, 71, at their home in the 2900 block of Double O Road.Investigators determined that Corey Sides shot Ann Sides before turning the gun on himself, according to sheriff's officials.A neighbor reported she hadn't seen the mother or her son since last Friday, Lt.
