LOS ANGELES (AP) — The pork industry is challenging the constitutionality of a voter-approved California measure that will prohibit the sale of meat products from hogs born to sows confined in spaces that don’t meet new minimum size requirements.A lawsuit filed late Thursday in San Diego federal court by the National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation targets Proposition 12, which voters overwhelmingly passed a year ago and goes into effect in 2022.“Proposition 12 has thrown a giant wrench into the workings of the interstate market in pork,” the filing states.The measure bans the sale in California of pork and veal from farm animals raised in conditions that don’t meet its standards. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report that said five crew members were sleeping in their quarters behind the wheelhouse on the second deck and another below deck when the fire broke out. LOGAN HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man involved in the officer-involved shooting in Logan Heights previously faced an attempted murder charge, according to court records. Witness video obtained by 10News shows the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Enrique Aguilar, walking in the middle of the street. In the video, it appears Aguilar starts walking toward the direction of police. Yells of “drop the gun” could be heard as Aguilar continues walking down the street.As Aguilar proceeds toward officers, police say he pointed a weapon at them. Several shots were fired and Aguilar fell to the ground. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say he was struck at least once and underwent surgery. Records uncovered by Team 10 show Aguilar’s criminal past dates back more than a decade—from vehicle code violations to drug offenses. In 2010, he faced attempted robbery charges. The following year, Aguilar and two others were charged with attempted murder and first-degree robbery. Documents show he was connected to a local gang. Aguilar entered a plea deal and pleaded guilty to robbery, according to documents. He was sentenced to six years in prison.In the court file, we found a letter he wrote in 2012 saying in part:“I am remorseful for my involvement that I took part in and take full responsibility for my own actions. Sometimes circumstances put us in situations that later on we regret. I’m thankful to God that nobody got killed in this matter. My intentions were never, never to hurt anybody… I wish I could take it all back so I could be with my family. I continuously apologize to the victim and my loved ones for the pain I’m putting them thru [sic]; not being able to support my wife as well for my 3 babies.” Aguilar is now in jail facing a slew of charges including three counts of first-degree attempted murder, attempted assault with a firearm, receiving stolen property, participating in a criminal street gang, and a felon in possession of a firearm. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo.
