JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Has anyone seen Engine 57? That's the question the San Diego County Fire Department is asking after the official legal takeover of the formerly volunteer-run Julian-Cuyamaca Fire District. The county and the small town department are stuck in a legal battle since the volunteer department's dissolution in April 2019. Previously, members of LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission), a group that overseas special county districts, voted to dissolve the volunteer-run fire department. In March 2019, citizens voted the fire agency in charge should be San Diego County Fire Department. In April 2019, the official handover was supposed to happen. People that are their neighbors, their friends," Julian resident Vicki Newman said. Newman said she has been an advocate for the small town department since volunteers saved her brother-in-law's life. She said she does not understand why both departments can't coexist."We need all the boots on the ground. We don't need just Cal Fire. It's not just J.C or Julian against Cal Fire," Newman said. (CNS) - Firefighters labored for a fifth day Wednesday to subdue a wildfire that has blackened thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County, leveling several dozen homes and outbuildings and forcing widespread evacuations.The blaze dubbed the Valley Fire erupted for unknown reasons early Saturday afternoon off Spirit Trail and Carveacre Road in Japatul Valley, southeast of Alpine, according to Cal Fire.The wind-driven inferno had burned an estimated 17,665 acres and is 27% contained as of Wednesday evening. Even with the eye of Irma missing Puerto Rico by 50 miles, the storm knocked out power and did damage. As Category 5 Hurricane Maria churns in the Caribbean late Tuesday, it is expected to strike the island head on. As of Tuesday evening, Maria had top winds of 175 MPH and a minimum pressure of 909 MBs. Although Hurricane Irma had top sustained winds of 185 MPH, Irma's pressure never dropped below 914 MBs. In preparation, President Donald Trump has ordered an emergency declaration, freeing up disaster resources. FEMA Director Brock Long said that the agency is sending extra supplies to the US Virgin Islands, and the Virginia Task Force 1 urban search and rescue team is remaining in Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told NPR that the territory has opened 500 shelter and is expecting "severe devastation.""Our main focus is to shift focus from the recovery process of Irma to make sure everyone is in a safe shelter," Rossello said. Adding to the potential disaster, Puerto Rico's mountainous terrain could cause landslides. Jeopardy! announced that Alex Trebek’s final episode as the game show’s host will air on Christmas.Trebek died on Sunday at the age of 80 following a battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.In March 2019, Trebek announced he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He immediately started treatment, but made no plans to retire. In fact, he kept hosting and taping new episodes.Trebek taped his final episode of Jeopardy on October 29. When new episodes resumed filming during the summer, and given Trebek’s health status, some minor changes were made in the studio. Contestants were separated by several feet, and Trebek stopped shaking the hands of contestants.As for the future of Jeopardy after Trebek, that remains in question.
